SK Telecom inks deal with Bell Labs on big data

SK Telecom said yesterday it has signed an agreement with Bell Labs to conduct research on big data platforms and video analytics system technologies.
Under the agreement signed on Monday, SK Telecom will carry out joint studies with Bell Labs, which is the research arm of France-based telecommunications equipment maker Alcatel-Lucent, it said in a press release.
The deal comes as local mobile carriers are beefing up their investment in technology to foster new growth engines. As part of such efforts, SK Telecom has been operating a big data-based business platform and developing future video technologies, such as a smart video recorder.
“The combination of SK Telecom’s experience of commercializing diverse telecommunications services and Bell Labs’ expertise in big data and video-related technologies will lead to the creation of innovative new services that bring greater value and convenience to customers,” said Byun Jae-woan, the chief technology officer at the mobile operator. Bell Labs holds more than 29,000 active patents.
