Lee Young-pyo player of year for Vancouver

Former Korean national football team defender Lee Young-pyo was named Player of the Year for the Vancouver Whitecaps, which later Sunday became the first Canadian club to advance to the Major League Soccer playoffs.
Lee, 35, started 32 of 33 regular season matches, the most of anyone on the team. Lee received the award prior to the Whitecaps’ final regular season match against the Portland Timbers. The Whitecaps lost, 1-0, but clinched the fifth and final Western Conferences playoff spot when FC Dallas’ lost to the Seattle Sounders , 3-1.
It was Lee’s first season with Vancouver. He previously played for Tottenham Hotspur and PSV Eindhoven. The Whitecaps will play the defending champion Los Angeles Galaxy in the first knock-out stage to be held Oct. 31 or Nov. 1.
