First external airbag
Volvo Car Korea said yesterday its new V40, which will be released next year in Korea, is the world’s first mass-produced passenger car with an external airbag to protect pedestrians. The company has positioned an airbag in front of the windshield, in the recess that hides the wipers. Seven forward-looking sensors mounted in the front bumper can detect objects the size and shape of a human leg. If such an object is detected, a set of charges raises the rear of the bonnet to deploy the airbag. Provided by the company
