[Letters] Thumbs up for ‘Writers with shared DNA’

Thank you for publishing the excellent column on “Writers with shared DNA” in your Oct. 30 issue. The writer, Dr. Lee Hong-koo, persuasively and rightly highlights the power of mothers, and by extension, women, in helping their societies, including Korea, through a long history of many forces of domination and dehumanization.

He portrays women as possessing “core energy for sustaining societies in Korea and Russia” by referring to two strong and widely recognized women - Ludmila Ulitskaya and Pak Kyong-ni, from Russia and Korea. I am proud to be a woman living in Korea for many decades when I hear a Korean man like Dr. Lee applaud the image of the countless women who defend, support and inspire their families and also contribute to their society’s realization of ever-greater achievements in the world. Would that all men, of any country and culture, could follow in his footsteps.
