LS Cable gets $440 million order from Qatar Petroleum

LS Cable & System, Korea’s leading cable manufacturer, said yesterday it won a $440 million submarine power cable order from Qatar Petroleum.

The project is to install two 100-kilometer circuits, including 200 kilometer (62 miles) of 132 kilovolts cable for efficient electric power supply from Ras Laffan Industrial City, 80 kilometers of Doha, the capital of Qatar, to Halul Island.

The 132 kilovolt cable consists of three core power cables with embedded fiber optic cables to transmit 100 megawatts power in total.

LS Cable & System secured the project on a turn-key basis. It won the contract through competition against Japanese manufacturers and a consortium of top European companies, the company said.

“This contract proves that LS Cable & System is a first mover, not a fast follower, in the global cable market,” said Son Jong-ho, the CEO of LS Cable.
