My friend’s son is getting married this weekend. Not so long ago, a daughter of another friend got married. It seems like yesterday when we talked about girlfriends and dating among ourselves, but we have gotten old enough to go to the weddings of ⓐthe children. I always thought that ⓑmy children’s wedding is ⓒa far away matter, but ⓓnow, matrimony is no longer ⓔa distant future. When I receive wedding invitations, I make extra efforts to attend the event and pay more attention to the ceremony.

ⓐ the children → our children 자기 자식들을 뜻하므로 소유격 our를 써야 함, the를 쓰는 경우 ‘그’ 아이들이라는 의미로 어색함
ⓑ my children’s wedding is → my children’s weddings were
ⓒ a far away matter → faraway matters 내용상 복수
ⓓ now → 생략 no longer가 현재를 내포함, now 생략
ⓔ a distant future → so far off 좀 더 자연스러운 표현으로

I spoke with ⓐa Chinese father in Beijing not so long ago, and the situation in China is not much different. Because of the “One Child Policy,” ⓑyoung generation of China grew up as ⓒthe “Little Prince” and “Little Princesses,” and supporting the children is just as financially burdensome for the Chinese parents as for ⓓthe Korean parents, if not more. Especially ⓔthe parents of the groom are taking great pains to buy or lease ⓕa new home for their son and his bride. It is the reality in China today that some children cannot afford to get married when their parents are not financially well-off.

ⓐ a Chinese father in Beijing → a father in Beijing Beijing이 들어 갔으므로 Chinese 불필요
ⓑ young generation of China → the young generation of China 특정하게 “한 자녀 정책’으로 태어난 세대를 지칭하므로 정관사 the를 씀
ⓒ the “Little Prince” and “Little Princesses” → “little princes and princesses” 누구나 알만한 대상은 아님, the 삭제
ⓓ the Korean parents → Koreans
ⓔ the parents of the groom → Parents of the groom 수식을 받는 다고 무조건 the를 써서는 안됨, 한정이 분명히 되는 경우에만 the를 써야 함, 일반적인 신랑의 부모를 뜻하므로 the를 쓰지 않음
ⓕ a new home → a home ‘신혼 집’이라는 표현이 영어에는 없음, a new home은 ‘새 집’을 뜻함
