Buses off nation’s roads from today

An unprecedented commuting and traffic nightmare looms today as bus companies across the nation go on strike at dawn this morning to protest lawmakers’ plans to recognize taxis as public transportation.

택시를 대중교통으로 인정하는 법률개정안에 항의하기 위해 오늘 새벽 전국 버스회사들이 버스 운행을 중단함에 따라 오늘 전례 없는 출근 교통 대란이 우려된다.
The National Association of Bus Companies said yesterday it would go ahead with a nationwide strike today starting with the first scheduled runs at 4:30 a.m. The strike will go on indefinitely and is expected to idle a total of 48,000 intercity, city and village buses. Korea has never had a nationwide bus strike. An average of 15.06 million people use buses per day.

전국버스운송사업자연합은 오늘 새벽 4시30분 첫 차부터 전국적으로 버스 운행을 거부하는 계획을 실행하겠다고 어제 말했다. 총 4만8천대의 시외, 시내, 마을 버스들이 무기한으로 운행을 중단할 것으로 예상된다. 전국적인 버스 파업은 이번이 처음이다. 하루 평균 1천5백6만명이 버스를 이용한다.
The National Assembly’s Legislation and Judiciary Committee met yesterday and passed a revision of the Act on the Support and Promotion of Utilization of Mass Transit System. The bill is intended to recognize taxis as public transportation, creating legal grounds to provide them with state subsidies and other benefits. It was sent to the Assembly’s plenary session for a final vote.

국회 법제사법위원회는 어제 회의를 열어 대중교통의 육성 및 이용 촉진에 관한 법률 개정안을 통과시켰다. 개정안은 택시를 대중교통으로 인정해 국가보조금과 다른 혜택을 택시에 제공할 수 있는 법적 근거를 갖도록 하는 것이다. 개정안은 국회 본회의에 상정됐다.
The bus association criticizes the revision as a political move to garner votes ahead of the December presidential election. “We are extremely sorry for causing inconvenience to people,” the association said in a statement.

버스운송사업자연합은 개정안을 12월 대선을 앞두고 투표를 얻기 위한 정치적 조치라고 비난한다. 버스운송사업자연합은 성명에서 “국민에게 불편을 끼쳐드려 심히 죄송하다”고 말했다.
“Until now, the government, transportation experts and bus industry opposed the bill. We already made clear that the politicians are responsible for the strike if they decided to go ahead with it, but ruling and opposition lawmakers unanimously approved it.”

“지금까지 정부, 교통 전문가들, 버스업계가 모두 개정안에 반대했다. 만약 개정안을 통과시키면 파업을 할 것이며 이에 대한 책임은 정치인들에게 있다는 점을 우리는 이미 분명히 밝혔다. 그런데도 여야 국회의원들이 만장일치로 개정안을 통과시켰다.”
