Daegu axes manager Moacir Pereira of Brazil

Daegu FC has chosen to not renew a contract with Brazilian head coach Moacir Pereira as its season winds down, according to team officials yesterday. The club is currently in 10th place in the 16-team K-League with only one game left.

The team has promoted assistant coach Dang Seong-joung as the interim manager.

Pereira, formerly a chief assistant coach for Brazil’s U-23 team and the U-20 team between 2010 and 2011, took the helm of the Korean club in November of last year. His predecessor Lee Young-jin was sacked after leading to the team to a 12th-place finish in the 2011 season, a slight improvement from the 15th-place finish a season earlier.

Daegu, with 16 wins, 14 losses and 13 draws, is on 61 points, six behind the ninth-place Incheon United and eight points ahead of the 11th-place Chunnam Dragons.
