Hyundai E&C leads project for Uruguay thermal power plant

A Korean consortium led by Hyundai Engineering & Construction has won a $630 million deal to build a power plant in Uruguay, the local builder said yesterday.

Under the contract with Usinas y Trasmisiones Electricas, Uruguay’s state-owned power company, the consortium will build a 530-megawatt thermal power plant in Punta del Tigre, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) west of the capital Montevideo, according to Korea’s top builder.

The consortium will complete the power plant 36 months after starting construction, it said.

The size of the deal won by Hyundai E&C is worth $542 million, accounting for 80 percent of the total $630-million contract. This marks Hyundai E&C’s first foray into Uruguay.
