오늘의 대한민국은 몇 사람의 천재가 아니라 수많은 ‘미생’들이 이뤄낸 것이다
『미생(未生)-아직 살아있지 못한 자』를 읽었다. 인터넷 포털에 연재되고 있는 이 만화는 얼마 전 세 권의 단행본으로 나왔다. 평소 즐겨 찾지 않던 만화책을 손에 들게 된 건 팟 캐스트 ‘이동진의 빨간 책방’ 때문이었다. 『미생』의 작가 윤태호는 이 방송에 출연해 샐러리맨 만화를 그린 이유를 이렇게 설명했다.“저는 인재 몇 명이 사람들을 먹여 살린다는 말이 너무 싫었거든요. 그렇다면 서울에 이렇게 많은 빌딩이 왜 필요하고, 많은 창문과 그들을 위한 책상과 불빛은 왜 필요한가…저 불빛 하나를 책임진 사람들이 결국 우리 사회를 굴러가게 만드는 것이고….”
그의 말을 듣는 순간 뭔가가 치밀어 올랐다. 다만 그 뭉클함의 정체가 선명하게 잡히지 않았다. 『미생』의 책장을 넘긴 건 그래서였다. 만화는 바둑 프로기사를 꿈꾸다 입단에 실패한 연구생이 종합상사에 들어가면서 시작된다. 회사에서 겪는 에피소드를 씨줄로, 바둑 이야기를 날줄로 직장생활의 원칙이 한 수, 한 수 놓인다.
“스스로 설득되지 않는 기획서를 올리는 것은 책임을 다하지 못한 것이다. 기획서 안에는 그 사람만의 에너지가 담겨 있어야 한다.”
“기획서는 쓰지만…되면 어떡하지? 만약 실패한다면 그 책임을 져야 하는데…기획서를 충실히 쓰는 데서 만족하고 그 이상의 노력을 안 하는 ‘사업놀이’를 하고 있다.”
오로지 이런 교훈의 언어들로 채워졌다면 많은 직장인의 공감을 얻지 못했을 것이다. 마음을 파고든 것은 등장인물 한 사람 한 사람을 바라보는 따뜻한 시선이었다. 일에 치여 늘 눈이 충혈된 과장, 협력업체에 끌려다니는 소심남, 회사 일과 아이 모두에게 최선을 다하는 워킹맘, 뒤처질까 조바심 내는 신입사원, 곤히 잠든 아들의 와이셔츠를 다려주는 어머니…. 어딘지 낯익은 모습들이다.
거대한 조직에서 익명이나 다름없는 이 ‘톱니’들이 없다면 어떻게 될까. 수십만 명을 먹여 살릴 아이디어를 내는 천재들은 필요하다. 그러나 그들의 힘만으로 세계 10위권의 무역국이 된 건 아니다. 밤늦게까지 남아 기획서를 다듬고 숫자 하나 때문에 계산기를 두드리는 그들, 제조 현장에서 품질을 높이기 위해 분투하는 그들, ＂열심히 살았지만 뭘 했는지 모르는” 하루를 보내는 그들이 없었다면 여기까지 오지 못했다.
다음 달 19일 선출될 대통령도, 장관들도, 사장님도 다양한 얼굴, 다양한 개성의 이름을 하나하나 불러주고 존중해주기 바란다. 지금 우리에게 절실한 건 미생의 정치학, 미생의 경영학인지 모른다. 직장이란 바둑판 위에 두 집을 만들어 완생(完生)이 되고 싶은 수많은 미생이 오늘도 ‘자기만의 바둑’을 두고 있다. 보이지 않아서 더 소중한 여러분의 수고에 고개 숙여 경의를 보낸다.

There are the workers who ⓕstay late in the office and revise the proposals, review the report to check all the numbers and stand in the manufacturing line to enhance the quality of products. These people do their best at work, but after a busy day at work, they often feel clueless how the day went. Without them, Korea couldn’t have come this far.
