Samsung employee probed for massive embezzlementAn employee of Samsung Electronics is under investigation on suspicion of embezzling a massive amount of company funds for gambling, prosecutors said yesterday.
The 30-year-old employee, who works in the accounting department of the Korean tech giant, is accused of embezzling tens of billions of won, equivalent to tens of millions of U.S. dollars, by fabricating documents, according to the prosecutors and the firm.
The suspect, whose identity was withheld, has a serious gambling addiction, they said, adding that he started pocketing the money for betting and to pay back debts.
Samsung Electronics requested a police investigation last month after detecting his alleged crime through an inspection, they said, adding the case was later sent to the prosecution.
Prosecutors said they will further investigate details on how he used the money and the exact amount of the embezzled funds, and plan to bring charges against him.
