Another debate, more lies
A debate is all about facts and truth./ 토론은 사실과 진실을 전제로 해야 한다/ In the two televised debates among the three top presidential candidates - Park Geun-hye of the ruling Saenuri Party, Moon Jae-in of the opposition Democratic United Party and Lee Jung-hee of the splinter Unified Progressive Party - a productive debate was impossible since one candidate was intent on telling lies from the start./ 새누리당 박근혜 후보, 민주통합당 문재인 후보, 소수당인 통합진보당의 이정희 후보 세 명의 주요 대통령 후보 사이에 벌어진 두 번의 TV 토론에서 한 후보가 처음부터 거짓말을 할 의도를 가지고 있었기 때문에 생산적인 토론은 불가능했다/ Lee said Korea’s minimum wage is the lowest among OECD member nations except Mexico./ 이 후보는 한국의 최저 임금이 멕시코를 제외하고 OECD 회원국가 중에서 가장 낮다고 말했다/ But that’s not true./ 하지만 그것은 사실이 아니다/ A total of eight OECD members, including Portugal, Turkey, the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Estonia and Mexico, have lower minimum wages than Korea./ 포르투갈, 터키, 체코 공화국, 폴란드, 슬로바키아, 헝가리, 에스토니아, 멕시코를 포함한 총 8개 OECD 회원국이 한국보다 최저 임금이 낮다/ On the other hand, Park’s argument that only New Zealand’s minimum wage is about 50 percent of its average wage was correct./ 한편, 박 후보의 뉴질랜드만이 최저 임금이 평균 임금의 약 50퍼센트 밖에 안 된다는 주장은 옳았다/Lee also made biting remarks about Samsung Chairman Lee Kun-hee and Hyundai-Kia Motor Group Chairman Chung Mong-koo by calling them “thugs above the Constitution.”/ 이 후보는 또한 이건희 삼성 회장과 정몽구 현대기아차 그룹 회장을 ‘헌법위에 군림하는 폭력배’라고 신랄하게 비난했다/ She said that transforming those chaebol owners into ordinary citizens is what she considers “economic democratization.”/ 그녀는 이러한 재벌 오너를 평범한 시민으로 돌려보내는 것이 “경제 민주화”라고 말했다/ That goes far beyond the realm of freedom of speech in a democratic society./ 표현의 자유가 보장된 민주사회에서 무슨 말인들 할 수 있다/ Responding to her attacks, even Moon jumped in and said that Lee must acknowledge some positive functions of the chaebol./ 이 후보의 공격에 심지어 문 후보까지 끼어들어 이 후보는 재벌의 긍정적인 기능도 알 필요가 있다고 말했다/
On North Korean issues, Lee posted an enemy-friendly message on her blog: “My and my party’s position is to say nothing about Pyongyang’s dynastic power succession./ 북한 문제와 관련하여 이 후보는 자신의 블로그에 북한 친화적인 메시지를 게재했다: “나와 우리 정당의 입장은 북한 왕조의 권력승계에 아무 말도 하지 않는 것이다/ If we should be blamed for that, we will be.”/ 만약 우리가 그 문제로 비난을 받아야 한다면 기꺼이 그렇게 할 것이다”/
When Park asked Lee if she will return the 2.6 billion won ($2.4 million) government subsidy for her presidential campaign if she drops out of the race, Lee tried to divert attention from the question by saying, “Don’t you remember that I said I ran in this election to thwart your presidential bid?”/ 박 후보가 만약 이 후보가 중도에 후보를 사퇴를 하면 대통령 선거를 위한 26억 원의 국고보조금을 반환할 것이냐는 질문에 “이번 선거에서 박 후보를 떨어뜨리겠다고 말씀드렸다. 기억하셔야 해요”라고 말을 함으로써 질문을 비켜가기도 했다/ But Moon and even Liberal Justice Party Chairman Sim Sang-jeong, Moon’s ally, vowed to return the government subsidy when presidential contenders drop out of the race./ 그러나 문 후보와 심지어 문 후보를 지지하고 있는 진보정의당 심상정 대표마저도 중도에 후보 사퇴 시 국고보조금을 반환할 것이라고 약속을 했다/ If Lee agrees, it could mark a great achievement in the history of Korean politics./ 만약 이 후보까지 동의한다면 한국 정치 역사상 대단한 업적을 기록할 수 있을 것이다/
We are appalled at the mean attacks against political rivals./ 우리는 정치적 경쟁자만 공격을 한다는 의미를 여실히 깨달았다/ Tens of millions of viewers have watched the debates being run off the rails by a maverick from a splinter party./ 수천만의 시청자는 소수 정당의 한 사람의 개성이 강한 사람이 비행을 저지르는 토론을 지켜보았다/ In an open society, anyone can express what they think./ 열린사회에서 누구든지 자신이 생각한 바를 표현할 수 있다/ But they must first respect other candidates’ integrity if they want an effective debate./ 그러나 만약 효과적인 토론을 원한다면 다른 후보의 진실성을 먼저 존중해야만 한다/ Instigation and sophistry based on lies do not constitute a debate./ 거짓을 바탕으로 한 선동과 궤변으로는 토론을 제대로 할 수가 없다/ There should be some limit on the drama a runaway candidate plays in the nation’s critical moment./ 국가의 중요한 순간에 고삐 풀린 후보가 연기를 하는 드라마에 제한을 가해야 한다/
