A 32-year-old man named Roh Young-dae who has been charged with rape and who escaped a police office in Gyeonggi on Thursday, was caught by police after a five-day manhunt.

The Ilsan Police Precinct in Gyeonggi said yesterday they have re-arrested the suspect, who was hiding at his acquaintance’s apartment in Ansan, Gyeonggi at 4:25 p.m.

The suspect was arrested by the police on Dec. 17 at his girlfriend’s house in Ulsan for raping a woman in her 20s at their apartment in Goyang, Gyeonggi at 4:30 a.m. on Dec. 11.

The suspect was previously convicted of nine crimes including rape and theft. He was released from prison in March.

According to the Ilsan Police, Roh escaped from police at 7:40 p.m. on Thursday while he was being transferred to a different room in the police station to the basement from the first floor after answering police questions.

Though he was handcuffed, he jumped over a 1.8-meter (5.9-foot) high wall surrounding the police office and crossed an eight-lane road.

Five police officers chased Roh, but failed to catch him.

The police obtained Roh’s whereabouts on Friday afternoon for the first time through CCTV footage that showed Roh shopping in a yellow hooded sweatshirt and black hiking boots at a Homeplus in Ansan.

His friend gave him cash on Friday so he could travel to Ansan.

The police also found that he stayed at a motel in the same city from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on the same day.
