A Boy’s Sister (15)

After losing her younger brother in a flash flood during the Monsoon season, Yoon-hee’s (Sung Yu-ri) life spirals out of control. She suffers from guilt and depression as she blames herself for the death of her younger brother who drowned while trying to save her in the torrential river.

The traumatic experience causes her to shut herself from the world as well as develop anxiety when leaving the house during the rainy season. As a result, Yoon-hee struggles to keep a long-term job as she is fired for her absence during rainy days.

One day she runs into Jin-ho (Lee Joo-seung), a troubled teenage bully who takes her wallet, which has a photo of her dead brother. They meet again at Jin-ho’s school when Yoon-hee starts a new job as a nutritionist at a cafeteria.

Although they got off to a bad start, the two become close and come to heal each other’s wounds.

This indie movie by Lee Won-sik drew media attention in part because of Sung’s decision to star in the film without pay. The film won the Supporting Preproduction Award at the 7th Seoul Christian Film Festival in 2009.

How far would you go to fight for your family? Based on a true story and starring Academy Award winner Hilary Swank, “Conviction” tells the story of a woman’s long struggle to win freedom for her imprisoned brother.

Betty Anne Waters is a working-class mother and a high school dropout living in Massachusetts. Her beloved sibling Kenny (Sam Rockwell) is convicted of murder and sentenced to life without parole. His cry of innocence is heard by no one but Betty Anne, whose unshakable belief in the innocence of her brother prompts her to take bold steps. Over the next 18 years, Betty Anne completes high school, then college and puts herself through law school so she can represent Kenny in court to exonerate him. Bending over backwards to save her brother, she sacrifices her marriage and her duties as a mother of two sons. Will she be able to free her brother of his wrongful conviction?

Margin Call (15)

“Margin Call” depicts the last 36 hours of a large Wall Street investment bank and its desperate efforts to save itself on the eve of the 2008 financial crisis.

The ensemble features Kevin Spacey, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Irons, Zachary Quinto, Demi Moore and Stanley Tucci in lead roles.

At the start of what seems like another normal business day, a massive layoff takes place. One of the victims is a veteran risk analyst Eric Dale (Stanley Tucci) who during his exit interview attempts to tell his now former employer that the firm should examine what he has been working on.

The contracted human resources staff has no interest to see Dale exit the premise. On his way out the door, Eric slips a USB drive to an entry-level analyst Peter Sullivan (Zachary Quinto), warning him to “be careful.”

That night, Sullivan unlocks what is a forecast of the company’s future. The USB reveals that the current volatility in the market is threatening the mortgage- backed securities which have been the major profit generator for the company. Consequently, the company is on the brink of the biggest bank collapse of all time.

Sullivan immediately alerts his supervisor, Will Emerson (Paul Bettany), who contacts his boss and floor head Sam Rogers (Kevin Spacey). As the word passes up through the hierarchy, others are called in for an all-night emergency meeting to come up with a survival plan before word spread that their toxic assets are worthless.

The New Yorker described the film as “easily the best Wall Street movie ever made.”

Love Is All You Need(15)

Ada (Trine Dyrholm) is a 40-something Copenhagen hairdresser. After a course of chemotherapy and awaiting the final all-clear diagnosis from the doctors, Ada comes home and catches her husband Leif (Kim Bodnia) having an affair. This is all too much for Ada, but she decides to put on a brave face for their daughter’s upcoming wedding in Italy.

On the way to the airport, Ada bumps her car with Philip’s (Peter Brosnan), who is a business tycoon.

After some conversation they both realize that their offspring are marrying each other and even carpool together to the wedding.

Like many romantic comedies, it’s obvious what will happen next. As the final preparations for their children’s wedding nears, the flames of Philip and Ada’s love intensify.

With the beautiful backdrop of Italy, “Love is All You Need” draws comparisons to “Mamma Mia!” but is about finding love the second time around.



Les Miserables (12)

In 19th-century France, stealing a loaf of bread places Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) in prison for 19 years. Valjean is on the run from a ruthless police inspector, Javert (Russell Crowe), for breaking parole.

As an ex-convict, he is refused shelter until a kind Bishop Myriel saves him in exchange for his promise to be an honest man. Valjean masks his identity to live a completely changed life under a pseudonym.

His life is reformed forever when he agrees to care for a factory worker, Fantine’s (Anne Hathaway) daughter Cosette. He learns to love as the bitterness of years of injustice melt away.

Now his sole reason for hiding and evading Javert is to protect Cosette.



A Royal Affair (19)

“A Royal Affair” is a fascinating tragedy depicting a love affair in the 18th century at the court of the mentally ill King Christian VII (Mikkel Boe Folsgaard) of Denmark.

At a young age of 15, English princess Caroline Mathilde (Alicia Vikander) is forced to marry the mad Danish King for political purposes. Soon she finds the king to be petulant, immature and politically ineffective.

His mental illness is soon so severe that a full-time German physician, Johann Friedrich Strueness (Mads Mikkelsen), is assigned to take care of him.

Though she initially despises Strueness, their shared passion for Enlightment ideas and philosophy strengthens their relationship.

In a country where Enlightment theoires are banned, the two decide to influence the king’s decision-making for the good of the country.

But their relationship creates something more dangerous as they become attracted to each other and start a clandestine affair - an affair that changed the nation forever.
