Daewoo ships named world’s best for 2012 by industry mags

Nine vessels built by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering have been named the best ships of 2012 by renowned British and U.S. shipbuilding industry magazines.

DSME, the country’s third-largest shipbuilder, said Thursday that four ships were chosen by Naver Architect in Britain, two by Fairplay Solution and three by Maritime Reporter in the United States. The magazines select outstanding ships at the end of each year.

The shipbuilder was recognized for its techniques to build crude oil tankers as four of the selected fall into this category. The other three were container carriers, and the remaining two product carriers.

The British media have been showing interest in a 16,000-TEU container carrier constructed by DSME, which is the world’s largest to date.
