Rediscovered beauty
painting, which is called “Buddha Amitabha,” while they were doing research on the Korean collection at the National Museum of Oriental Art in Rome. The painting is considered high quality with a vivid red robe and delicate gold patterning of lotus flowers, and is thought to be from the early 14th century of the Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392). Buddhist paintings from Goryeo, the heyday of Korean Buddhism, are known for their beauty but are numbered at only 160 worldwide. Provided by the National Museum of Korea.
국립중앙박물관은 9일 한국 학계가 몰랐던 고려시대의 불화를 이탈리아에서 발견했다고 발표했다. 국립중앙박물관의 학예사들은 로마의 국립 동양예술 박물관의 한국관 소장품을 조사하는 과정에서 “아미타불(아미타 내영도)”로 불리는 이 불화를 발견했다고 한다. 섬세한 연꽃무늬 금박 문양이 새겨진 홍빛깔 의상을 입은 이 아미타불 불화는 대단히 수준 높은 작품으로 고려왕조(918-1392)였던 14세기 초에 제작됐다고 추정된다. 한국 불교의 전성기인 고려 시대의 불화는 대단히 아름답다고 알려졌지만 세계적으로 오직 160 작품만 남아 있다.
