Ssangyong exits 2012 as most award-laden construction firm

Ssangyong Engineering and Construction received most awards overseas last year, according to data from the International Contractors Association of Korea (ICAK).

The company picked up eight awards in four countries, including the BCA Awards in Singapore after it completed the Marina Bay Sands Hotel.

It also won the Rospa Awards in the U.K., the IDEA Awards in the U.S. and the Reddot Design Award in Germany.

It earned twice as many gongs and accolades internationally as Hyundai Engineering and Construction.

The ICAK said local builders pocketed overseas orders worth $64.9 billion in 2012, slightly below the organization’s original target of $70 billion. In terms of quality, Korean companies have shown their competitiveness not only in their construction skills, but also in design and safety, it added.
