Park’s transition team announces more changes

The presidential transition team of Park Geun-hye yesterday announced more realignment plans for the ministries following last week’s government restructuring.

In a press conference, Chin Young, deputy head of the presidential transition committee, said the Ministry of Future Planning and Science will have two vice ministers. One will oversee science, the other will oversee information and communication technology. The ministry, which will be newly created for the Park government, is one of her signature projects aimed at creating jobs.

The Foreign Affairs and Trade Ministry’s trade negotiation operation will be handed over to the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Resources, Chin said. The Foreign Ministry in the Park administration will still oversee multilateral and bilateral economic diplomacy and international economic cooperation.

According to the transition team, the vice minister for science in the future planning ministry will take over roles that were handled by the Ministry of Science and Technology before it was restructured by President Lee Myung-bak five years ago. The vice minister will also take over some operations of the Ministry of Knowledge Economy on developing new growth engines.

The vice minister of information and communication technology will take over the areas linked to the new convergence technologies from the Korea Broadcastings Commission, information planning operations from the Ministry of Public Administration and Security, digital contents and broadcasting advertisement from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and research and development from the Knowledge Ministry.
