The sky’s the limit
Korea’s long dream of launching rockets into space was finally realized after two disheartening failures./ 우주로 로켓을 발사하는 한국의 오랜 꿈이 두 번의 쓰라린 실패 후에 마침내 실현되었다/ At 4 p.m. yesterday, the country’s first space rocket, the Korea Space Launch Vehicle-1 (KSLV-1), successfully lifted off from the Naro Space Center in Goheung, South Jeolla./ 어제 오후 4시, 한국의 첫 우주 로켓인 한국우주발사체(KSLV-1)가 성공적으로 전라남도 고흥에 있는 나로 우주센터에서 발사되었다/ After watching the breathtaking moment of the launch, the whole nation rejoiced to hear the news that the KSLV-1 successfully put its 100-kilogram Science and Technology Satellite-2C into orbit./ 숨 막히는 발사 순간을 지켜본 모든 국민은 한국우주발사체가 성공적으로 100킬로그램의 과학 기술위성-2C를 우주 궤도에 안착시켰다는 소식에 환호했다/With that remarkable achievement, Korea became the 11th member of the elite “space club,” which refers to countries that have put their own satellites into orbit from launch pads in their territories via their own space vehicles./ 이와 같은 놀라운 성과로 한국은 11번째로 자국의 우주발사체로 자국의 영토에 있는 발사대에서 자국의 위성을 우주궤도에 올린 국가를 뜻하는 “우주 클럽”에 가입하게 되었다.
The success is particularly meaningful as it was achieved after failures in 2009 and 2010 and after suffering two postponements due to technical problems./ 이번의 성공은 기술적인 문제로 인해 두 번의 연기를 하고 2009년과 2010년에 실패를 경험한 후에 달성한 것이라서 특히 의미가 있다고 할 수 있다/ The two failures were part of the cost of space exploration and the price a country pays to reach a stepping stone to advance its space technology./ 두 번의 실패는 우주 탐사를 하는 과정에서 생기는 대가의 일부였으며 우주기술을 발전시키기 위한 징검다리를 건너기 위해 지불한 대가라고 할 수 있다/
The success is a tremendous accomplishment for our science and technology community given the critical lack of technology, budget and manpower compared to other space powers./ 이번 성공은 다른 우주 강국과 비교하여 기술, 예산, 인력이 턱없이 부족한 것을 감안하면 우리 과학기술계의 엄청난 업적이라 할 수 있다/ We extend our sincere congratulations to the scientists at the Naro Space Center and elsewhere who devoted themselves to realizing the nation’s dream of making it to space./ 우리는 우주로 가기 위한 국가적인 꿈을 실현하기 위해 자신을 헌신한 나로 우주센터와 모든 곳에서 일한 과학자들에게 진심으로 박수를 보낸다/
The successful launch carries great significance as it shows how we put together the technologies and experiences required to achieve independent space technology./ 우주기술 자립을 달성하기 위해 필요한 기술과 경험을 모두 확보했다는 점에서 성공적인 발사는 대단히 의미가 있다고 할 수 있다/ Now, we should make more efforts to facilitate technological advancements./ 이제 우리는 기술적 발전을 촉진하기 위해서 더 많은 노력을 해야 한다/ Space technologies that involve materials engineering, combustion engineering and control engineering have a huge ripple effect on other industries./ 재료공학, 연소공학, 제어공학을 포함하고 있는 우주기술은 다른 산업에 대한 파업효과가 대단히 크다/ Those technologies are essential to reinforcing our self-reliance in defense as well./ 이러한 기술들은 또한 자주국방을 강화하기 위해서도 필수적이다/ The most urgent task for us is developing our own first-stage rocket instead of relying on foreign technology as we did with the Russian-made first-stage rocket used in the launch yesterday./ 우리에게 가장 긴급한 일은 어제 발사에서 1단계 로켓을 러시아에서 만든 것을 사용한 것처럼 외국 기술에 의존하지 말고 자체적인 1단계 로켓을 개발하는 것이다/
President-elect Park Geun-hye has expressed interest in space development and vowed to advance the date of developing a Korean first stage launch vehicle from 2021 to 2019./ 박근혜 대통령 당선자는 한국의 1단계 발사체 개발을 2021에서 2019년으로 앞당기도록 노력하겠다며 우주개발과 관련한 관심을 표명한 바 있다/ That calls for support systems and sufficient budgets./ 그렇게 하기 위해서는 지원 시스템과 충분한 예산이 뒷받침되어야 한다/ At the same time, the new government must consider a review of the current research paradigms in order to achieve a synergy effect among technology, capital and know-how by reinvigorating civilian participation in government-led space projects./ 동시에 새로운 정부는 정부가 주도하는 우주 프로젝트에 민간이 참여할 수 있도록 힘을 보탬으로써 기술, 자본, 노하우 사이에 시너지 효과를 거둘 수 있도록 하기 위해 현재의 연구 패러다임을 재검토해야 한다/ It is time to take advantage of a space full opportunities./ 우주를 이용할 완전한 기회가 온 것이다/
