Heroes rise during troubled times

I believe tone-deaf people have an advantage when learning Chinese. When I took Chinese lessons in the early 1980s, some students in my class had a hard time with pronunciation. The language has four tones - long, short, high and low - and they couldn’t imitate the musical tones for over a month.

When we went to a noraebang together, we realized that those struggling with pronunciation were tone-deaf. For example, they couldn’t keep a stable, level sound when they were supposed to produce a long, high note. Some ended up giving up their attempts to learn Chinese. But after a couple of months, the situation changed. Those tone-deaf classmates who survived the initial ordeal ended up far better at pronunciation. That’s when I realized that the harder you try, the better you learn.

The same goes for speeches. A stutterer can become a great orator. The story of British King George VI was made into the movie, “The King’s Speech.” To cope with his speech impediment, George hired Australian speech therapist Lionel Logue. On Sept. 3, 1939, after the United Kingdom declared war on Nazi Germany, he made a speech that has been remembered and celebrated since.

“In this grave hour, perhaps the most fateful in our history, I send to every household of my peoples, both at home and overseas, this message, spoken with the same depth of feeling for each one of you as if I were able to cross your threshold and speak to you myself.” He spoke slowly but calmly and resolutely, and his address united the people of Great Britain.

George VI is not alone. Winston Churchill was also a stutterer, but he made constant efforts to improve. He read books and memorized great phrases and sentences. He wrote speeches by himself and practiced over and over. The unseen side of a great speaker is the strenuous work put in so humorous and moving messages can be delivered.

Philip of Macedon said that he feared the tongue of Demosthenes more than a million Greek soldiers, but Demosthenes had a speech impediment by birth. He was so tenacious that in order to improve his posture, he hung a blade on the ceiling to train himself. When Macedonia invaded Greece, he called on Athenians to rise up. Just as heroes emerge in difficult times, great speeches are made in times of crisis.

In a week, Park Geun-hye will make her first speech as president. She’s working hard on the speech with her aides. The necessary conditions for a great speech are present: the combination of personal hardship and troubled times. We all know Park Geun-hye’s difficult life story. And Pyongyang has conducted a nuclear test, and the economy is struggling.

Although it wasn’t a speech, Park moved the people with a single sentence seven years ago, “What about Daejeon?” That’s what we need right now. The citizens are waiting for her to unite them. “What about the Republic of Korea?”

음치들에게 유리한 언어가 중국어다. 중국어를 배우던 1980년대 초. 가끔 유난히 발음이 안 되는 이들이 있었다. 중국어에 노래처럼 있는 장단고저 리듬(4聲), 이걸 한 달 내내 흉내 못 내는 거였다. 노래방에 같이 가보면 금세 답이 나왔다. 대개 음치들이다. 이를테면 1성은 길게 높은 ‘도-’ 해야 할 것을 도의 음정이 중간에 흐트러지거나 오르내리는 식이다. 중간에 그만두는 이들도 꽤 됐다. 속으로 쯧쯧, 연민의 혀를 찼다. 그런데 웬걸, 두어 달 후엔 사정이 확 달라졌다. 살아남은 음치들은 정상인(?)보다 훨씬 또박또박 정확하게 발음했다. 그때 깨쳤다. 아-. 어렵게 배울수록 단단해지는구나.
연설도 마찬가지다. 말더듬이가 더 잘된 예가 꽤 된다. 영화 ‘킹스스피치’의 실제 주인공 영국의 조지 6세. 잘난 아버지와 형에 눌려 어려서부터 더듬거렸다. 호주 출신 언어치료사 라이오넬 로그를 불러 그야말로 피나는 노력을 한다. 마침내 1939년9월3일, 명가의 반열에 오른 연설을 남긴다. 나치 독일에 대한 선전포고다. “우리 앞에 놓인 이 암울한 시간이 어쩌면 우리 역사에서 가장 중요한 시기가 될지 모릅니다. 여러분 가정을 하나하나 방문해 직접 얘기하고 싶은 마음입니다. …” 느리지만 단호하고 차분한 호소로, 영국 국민의 마음을 하나로 묶어낸 명연설로 남았다.
어디 조지 6세뿐이랴. 선천적 말더듬이 처칠의 예도 유명하다. 그는 타고난 단점을 더 많은 노력으로 이겨냈다. 어려서부터 많은 책을 읽고, 명문장은 통째로 외웠다고 한다. 연설문을 직접 쓰고 수없이 연습도 했다. 난세의 명연술가 처칠의 본색은 ‘유머와 감동의 메시지’를 위해 물밑에서 정신 없이 발장구를 친 백조였던 셈이다. 또 있다. 마케도니아의 필립왕이 “그리스 군사 백만명보다 그의 세치 혀가 무섭다”던 데모스테네스. 역시 혀 짧은 선천적 말더듬이였다. 자세를 교정한다며 천장에 칼을 매단 채 훈련한 ‘독종’이다. 마케도니아의 그리스 침공 때 나온 명연설 ‘아테네여 일어나라’는 이런 노력 끝에 탄생했다. 또 하나의 깨침. 아-. 난세에 영웅 나듯 어려울 때 명연설이 나는구나.
일주일 뒤면 ‘대통령 박근혜’의 첫 연설이 나온다. 참모진뿐 아니라 박 당선인도 열심히 준비 중이란다. 개인과 세상의 어려움이 합쳐져야 탄생한다는 명연설, 필요조건은 갖춰졌다. 박 당선인 개인사의 어려움은 익히 알려진 바다. 북한 핵실험과 추락하는 경제, 세상의 어려움도 가득하다. 충분조건은 뭘까? 감성과 진심이다. 힌트는 있다. 연설은 아니지만 7년 전 국민 마음을 움직인 한 마디, “대전은요?”의 경험이다. 지금 필요한 것도 그런 게 아닐까. 어려울 때 국민 마음을 하나로 묶을 한 마디, ‘대한민국은요?’의 탄생을 기다린다.
