남자의 성공은 여자가 쓰는 돈보다 더 많이 버는 것?
남자와 여자의 차이를 유머러스하게 꼬집는 말 중에 이런 것도 있다. 쇼핑할 때 남자는 꼭 필요한 1000원짜리 물건을 2000원에 사온다. 여자는 별로 필요하지 않은 2000원짜리 물건을 1000원에 사온다. 여자는 남자가 결혼 후 변하길 바라지만 남자는 변하지 않는다. 남자는 결혼 후 여자가 안 변하길 바라지만 여자는 반드시 변한다. 성공의 기준도 다르다. 남자의 성공은 여자가 쓰는 돈보다 더 많이 버는 것이다. 여자의 성공은? 그런 남자와 결혼하는 것이다.제아무리 21세기가 찾아온 지 한참 됐고 페미니즘 담론이 널리 퍼졌어도 남자는 돈, 여자는 매력이라는 공식은 여전한 것 같다. 여자들이 남자의 외모를 본다 해도 기껏 키 정도다. 외국의 최근 연구결과들도 동서양을 막론하고 고학력 현대 여성은 경제력이 강한 남자 배우자를 선호하는 반면, 남성은 여성의 신체적 매력을 추구한다고 결론짓는다. 게다가 전문직•관리직 중에서도 가장 높이 오른 남성의 배우자는 대개 직장을 다니지 않는 전업주부란다. 남편은 육아•요리•청소를 분담할 필요 없이 자기 일과 경력관리에 집중하고, 부인은 육아와 자기 매력 가꾸는 일에 전념하는 분업체제가 더 효율적이기 때문이라고 한다(캐서린하킴, 『매력자본』). 우리나라에서도 꽤 여유 있는 집들은 부인이 전업주부로 들어앉아 아이 교육에 몰두한다.
그런데 경제력과 외모라는 게 어디 하늘에서 떨어지는가. 대단히 아름다운 외모를 타고나는 사람은 어느 나라를 막론하고 보통 5% 이내라고 한다. 나머지는 그냥 살든가 성형수술 같은 변칙을 동원해야 한다. 그러나 경제력은 수술 정도로 해결되지 않는다. 결혼정보회사 ‘선우’가 얼마 전 자신들이 21년간 결혼을 성사시킨 1만3000쌍(2만6000명)을 조사해 통계를 냈다. 결혼한 남녀가 동갑일 경우 남자의 연소득은 여자보다 평균 388.8만원 많았다. 여자가 한 살 어려질 때마다 남자의 연봉은 449.9만원씩 더 많아졌다. 남성이 여섯 살 연하의 여성과 결혼하려면 매년 3090만원을 더 벌어야 한다는 계산이다.
좋게 표현해 안정적이고 나쁘게 보면 동맥경화가 점점 심해지는 우리 사회다. 특히 경제력은 혼자 힘으로 업그레이드하기가 과거보다 훨씬 어려워졌다. 달리 탈출구가 보이지 않으니 젊은이들이 결혼시장에나마 한 가닥 기대를 거는 것은 아닐까. ‘청담동 앨리스’류의 판타지에 한때나마 눈과 귀를 주는 것 아닐까. 시각장애인도 대기업 상속녀쯤 돼야 멋진 남자와 연애한다는 TV드라마 설정을 보며 서글픔을 먼저 느낀다. 인생엔 경제력과 외모 말고도 중요한 것이 너무나 많다. 지레 움츠러드는 젊은이들도 미욱스럽지만 젊음이 활개칠 만한 사회를 만들어주지 못하는 어른들도 문제다.
