외래종 장미도 8년이면 토종 장미가 된다는데…
좀 이른 꽃구경을 다녀왔다. 충북 오창에 있는 충북농업기술원 장미 온실로. 이곳에 가게 된 건 작은 기사 덕분이었다. 이 기술원 김주형 박사가 18년 동안 26종의 토종 장미 품종을 개발해 행안부가 선정하는 ‘지방행정의 달인’에 선정됐다는 내용이었다. 찔레꽃이나 해당화가 아니라 ‘토종 장미’란다. 듣기만 해도 매혹적이지 않은가. 궁금한 건 못 참고 달려가 확인하는 걸 업으로 살아온 터, 두 시간 거리 정도는 문제될 게 없었다. 게다가 장미를 보러 가는 길인데….토종 장미를 찾아 오창으로 가는 길, 어린 시절 옛집을 생각했다. 동네에서 우리 집은 ‘장미담장’ 집으로 통했다. 엄마는 큰길과 면한 담장을 철조망으로 만들고 양 옆에 넝쿨장미를 몇 그루 심었다. 이 녀석들이 봄이면 철조망 가득 빨간 장미를 피워내곤 했다. 계절이 바뀌면 장미도 졌을 터인데, 내 기억 속의 담장엔 언제나 장미가 만발해 있다. 그 시절, 장미 담장 안에서 나는 장미처럼 아름답고 화려하게 만개할 미래를 꿈꾸곤 했다.
추억에 잠겨 들어선 온실에서 나는 먼저 내 상상력의 빈곤을 탓했다. 토종이라기에 기껏 찔레꽃이나 해당화 개량종 정도로 생각했으니 말이다. 한데 그곳엔 한복 색깔만큼 화려하고 다양한 색깔의 꽃들이 제각각 피어 있었다. 초록빛이 도는 ‘그린펄’부터 보라색•다홍색•붉은색•노란색•주황색. 아직 개발이 덜 됐다는 흰색과 핑크색이 섞여 있는 ‘새알’. 또 옛날 날염 기술이 발달하지 않았을 때 나왔던 아이들 댕기 색깔, 유치하고 촌스러운 ‘킴스홍’의 선명한 진다홍색은 정겹고 감동적이었다.
생김새도 가시투성이 찔레꽃이나 해당화가 아니다. 그냥 장미다. 외래종과 찔레꽃 등을 두루 섞어서 신품종을 만든다고 했다. 육종을 거듭해 8년 정도 지나면 새 종자가 나온단다. 남의 씨앗으로 육종해도 품종 기준에 맞는 새로운 종자가 개발되면 토종 종자로 등록된다고 했다. 김 박사는 말했다. “씨앗은 어디서 왔든 우리나라 땅에서 우리가 만든 종자면 토종이죠. 이젠 종자를 수출해서 로열티를 벌고 싶어요.”
