Demand for holiday travel pushes airline traffic higher

Airline traffic in the first quarter increased 6.8 percent year-on-year to 139,000 flights, thanks to growing demand for holiday travel overseas and tourists from China and Southeast Asia, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said yesterday.

The number of domestic flights, 47,000, was not much different than a year ago, but the international flights increased 16.2 percent year-to-year to 86,000.

The peak time of airline travel was 10 a.m., when an average of 124 passenger planes were in the sky over Korea. As the volume of air traffic increases, the ministry said it will continue to improve airline safety.
