“짐을 잔뜩 실은 차량들과 포옹하는 사람들의 모습이 보입니다. 기사의 제목은 'Turned away 돌려 보내져'입니다. 자세한 내용은 기사 내용을 보면서 알아보도록 하겠습니다.”
한 단계씩 따라하다 보면 문장이 저절로 외워지고 영어 구조에 대한 감각이 자연스럽게 생겨난답니다.
“첫 문장의 뼈대를 살펴보면 주어는 South Korean businessmen, 서술어는 are, 보어는 stopped입니다. 문장의 뼈대에 해당하는 주요 성분들을 말해 보도록 하겠습니다.
South Korean businessmen(남한 사업가들이)…. are(있다)….stopped(제지 받고)….
이제 수식어 부분을 파악해 보겠습니다. 시점은 (yesterday) ‘어제’이고 (from transporting rice and daily necessities) ‘쌀과 일용물자를 수송하는 것을’ 제지 받고 있습니다. 이 물자들은 (to their factories) (in the Kaesong Industrial Complex) ‘개성공단에 있는 공장으로 갈’ 물자들입니다. 이제 문장의 뼈대에 수식어 부분까지 붙여서 한번에 말해 보도록 하세요.”

“두 번째 문장은 ‘남북산업공원에서 동료들이 지켜보는 가운데 두 사업가가 연대감의 표시로 포옹을 하고 있다’는 내용입니다. 두 번째 문장도 말하여 본 후에 다시 첫 문장과 이어서 말해 보도록 합니다.”

“세 번째 문장은 ‘북한정권이 남한의 사업가들이 그곳에 있는 자신들의 공장을 방문하려는 요청을 들어주지 않음에 띠라 공급물자를 실은 세 대의 남한 차량이 되돌려 보내졌다’는 내용입니다. 세 번째 문장도 말하기 연습을 한 후에 앞의 문장들과 이어서 다시 말해 보세요.”
