More nasty netizens

The scandal over Yoon Chang-jung, the sacked Blue House spokesman who brought disgrace to himself and the nation with alleged sexual misconduct during President Park Geun-hye’s first official visit to Washington, has shocked the nation. Yoon’s audacious and shameful misconduct has severely damaged the reputation of this government and the national dignity to boot. But the unsavory incident is generating another embarrassment for the country. Personal details and photos of the Korean-American intern alleged to be the victim of Yoon’s sexual misdemeanor have been spreading around the Internet and on mobile social networking platforms.

Some people are spreading all kinds of rumors, gossip and stories about the victim and her family. The photos that are supposed to show the young woman, who was hired by the Korean embassy to assist the entourage of the president, are actually four different people, none of whom are related to the incident.

It is obnoxious that people are exchanging and spreading personal information and rumors about the victim of sexual abuse instead of offering sympathy and comfort to her. It is demeaning to learn that society takes pleasure in gossiping about a sex crime victim, even a misdemeanor. All the tale telling is further damaging Korea’s reputation.

One member of a conservative Web site claimed that he hacked MissyUSA, a site for Koreans in the U.S. that first reported Yoon’s sexual advances toward the Korean-American intern. Other people cheered the act saying the Web site should be punished for disgracing Yoon, who was a conservative journalist before he was named Blue House spokesman. Such behavior driven by ideological fervor is harmful to society. Sexual misconduct is a hazardous crime and has nothing to do with ideological issues.

Law enforcement authorities must weed out these scandalmongers and teach them justice and morality. Anyone with a conscience should immediately stop trading personal information and rumors about the victim. Even the Korean Embassy is avoiding contact with the victim while a U.S. investigation is underway. That shows respect to U.S. law and for the victim, who has been traumatized by an ugly incident.

윤창중 전 청와대 대변인의 성추행 의혹 사건은 지금까지 드러난 내용만으로도 충격적이다. 국격을 떨어뜨려도 유분수다. 그런데 그만큼 부끄러운 행동이 사이버 공간에서 또 다시 벌어지고 있다. 이번 사건의 피해자인 재미동포 인턴의 것이라는 신상정보와 사진이 인터넷과 소셜네트워크서비스(SNS)를 통해 확산하고 있는 것이다.
일부 네티즌은 심지어 피해자 부모의 고향을 포함한 온갖 확인되지 않은 이야기를 사실인양 마구 퍼트리고 있다. 더욱 황당한 것은 피해자의 것이라며 사이버 공간에서 돌고 있는 사진이 적어도 네 명의 것이라는 점이다. 일부는 이번 사건과 전혀 무관한 인물로 이미 확인됐다.
성범죄 피해자를 감싸고 위로는 못해줄망정 이런 식으로 미확인 사진과 개인정보를 서로 돌려보는 것은 타인의 인권을 심각하게 침해하는 범죄 행위일뿐더러 도덕적으로도 지탄받아 마땅하다. 성범죄 피해자를 이렇게 흥미의 대상으로 취급하는 것은 사회적인 수치다. 가뜩이나 이번 사건으로 땅에 떨어졌다는 자탄의 목소리가 높은 국격을 더욱 떨어뜨리는 일이다.
게다가 보수 성향 이용자들이 주로 이용하는 한 인터넷 사이트에는 한 회원이 이번 사건을 처음 폭로한 미국 내 한인 생활정보 사이트 ‘미시USA’를 해킹했다는 주장을 버젓이 올렸다. 심지어 보수이념을 가졌다는 이유로 윤 전 대변인을 두둔하고 사건을 폭로한 미시USA는 해킹해도 된다는 식의 댓글도 올라왔다. 이념에 사로잡혀 실체적인 진실을 외면하려는 이런 양식 없는 행동은 누구에게도 도움이 되지 않는다. 성추행은 이념의 문제가 아니라 추악한 범죄일 뿐이기 때문이다.
사법당국은 이런 무도한 행동을 한 사람들을 반드시 색출해 엄단해야 한다. 그리고 양식이 있는 사람이라면 이런 사진을 주고받는 행동을 당장 중단해야 한다. 주미한국대사관은 범죄피해자라는 이유만으로 피해여성에 대한 어떠한 접촉도 삼가고 있을 정도다. 이는 미국 사법당국의 요청이기도 하지만 이게 성범죄에 대처하는 바람직하고 양식 있는 행동일 것이다.
