Kumho announces expansion of radio frequency ID tags

Kumho, Korea’s No. 2 tiremaker, said yesterday it will place radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags on all products to cut costs and boost management efficiency.

The company has been putting RFID tags on bus or truck tires and original equipment tires supplied to BMW, but will tag all passenger car tires for domestic use. By next year, the system will be applied to plants and stores overseas.

The affiliate of Kumho Asiana Group said adopting the system will save 10.4 billion won ($9.2 million) in logistics and product quality management. The RFID tag, made by Kumho Tire and Asiana IDT, tracks items from production to sale.
