Preserve upward mobility
A society with dampened upward mobility is a stagnant one./ 사회적 계층 이동이 줄어든 사회는 정체된 사회라고 할 수 있다/ If parents’ wealth leads to their children’s wealth - or vice versa for that matter - one can hardly expect genuine development of society./ 만약 부모의 부가 자녀들의 부로 이어진다거나 그 반대의 경우, 사람들은 진정한 사회의 발전을 거의 기대하기 어렵게 된다/ That’s why we take special note of the findings of a paper entitled “Parents’ income bracket and children’s employment.”/ 이것이 바로 우리가 “부모의 소득 계층과 자녀의 고용”이라는 제목의 논문 결과물에 특별히 주목하는 이유다/ The paper has made the conclusion that the more money a parent makes, the more likely their offspring could be hired by big companies in the job market./ 그 논문은 부모가 더 많은 돈을 가지고 있으면 그 자녀들이 구직 시장에서 대기업에 의해 고용될 가능성이 더 높아진다고 결론을 내리고 있다/The reason for the distressing phenomenon is two-fold./ 이 어처구니없는 현상에 대한 이유는 두 가지가 있다/ First, large companies tend to take into consideration the scores of applicants’ Toeic tests and their foreign language training overseas./ 첫 번째는 대기업들이 지원자의 토익시험 점수와 해외 어학연수 경험을 고려하는 경향이 있기 때문이다/ As a result, young job seekers with rich parents are more likely to find better jobs at bigger firms primarily thanks to their parents’ wealth./ 따라서 부유한 부모를 가진 젋은 구직자들은 주로 부모의 부 덕분에 대기업에서 더 좋은 일자리를 구하기가 더 쉽게 되는 것이다/
Second, as parents with higher incomes have more connections and information in the society than otherwise, that translates into a better opportunity for their children when they enter the job market./ 두 번째, 높은 소득이 있는 부모들은 그렇지 않은 사람들보다 사회에서 더 많은 인간관계를 가지고 있고 정보를 많이 가지고 있기 때문에 자녀들이 구직 시장에 진입할 때 더 좋은 기회로 활용하게 된다는 것이다/ The paper also pointed out that large businesses, too, have a high regard for the income level of their applicants’ parents./ 그 논문은 또한 대기업 역시 지원자 부모의 소득 수준을 많이 고려하고 있다고 지적했다/
As a matter of fact, the study results are nothing new given a number of earlier academic reports which have proved the deterioration of such a phenomenon in our society, not to mention the conventional wisdom which strongly supports the conclusion./ 실은, 그 연구 결과는 그러한 결론을 강력하게 뒷받침하는 일반적인 통념은 말할 것도 없고 우리 사회에 그러한 현상이 악화되고 있다는 것을 입증한 많은 이전의 학술보고서를 감안하면 새삼스러운 것은 아니다/ But if parents’ material wealth determines their children’s job opportunities, it will only end up severely hurting the aspirations of the underprivileged to go up the social ladder./ 그러나 만약 부모의 물질적인 부가 그들 자녀의 구직 기회를 결정한다면, 그것은 결국 특혜를 받지 못한 사람들이 사회적 계층을 올라가고자 하는 열망을 무참히 해치게 될 뿐이라는 것이다/
A society which deprives its members of a precious opportunity for success is a dreamless one./ 성공을 위한 소중한 기회를 사회 구성원에게서 빼앗는 사회는 꿈이 없는 사회라 할 수 있다/ Before the problem further worsens, the government, civic groups and other leaders of our society should strive to correct the abnormal situation by building pressure on big companies to change the way they hire new recruits./ 문제가 더 악화되기 전에 정부, 시민단체, 우리 사회의 다른 지도자들이 신입 사원을 고용하는 방식을 바꾸도록 대기업에 압력을 행사함으로써 비정상적인 상황을 바로 잡도록 노력해야 한다/
Instead of selecting new employees based on high-cost specs such as Toeic scores or overseas language training, large companies must recruit them based on their ability to solve problems related to their jobs, communicative competency and ingenuity./ 토익 점수나 해외어학 연수와 같은 고 비용의 스펙을 바탕으로 신입 직원을 선발하는 대신에 대기업은 직무와 관련된 문제를 해결할 수 있는 능력, 의사소통 능력과 창의성을 바탕으로 직원을 선발해야만 한다/ To do that, they must devise effective ways to measure such capabilities, which are more useful than linguistic skills./ 그렇게 하기 위해서 대기업은 언어적인 능력보다 더 유용한 그러한 능력을 측정하기 위해 효율적인 방법을 고안해 내야 한다/
Though many big businesses are well aware of the need to invent more innovative recruitment methods, they fell short of implementing them for various reasons, including inconvenience and other costs involved./ 많은 대기업들이 더 혁신적인 사원모집 방법을 찾을 필요성은 잘 알고 있지만 관련 다른 비용과 불편한 점과 같은 다양한 이유를 들며 실행하는 것을 꺼리고 있는 것이 사실이다/
However, the vicious cycle of parents’ wealth affecting their children’s job opportunities has reached a critical phase./ 하지만, 부모의 부가 자녀의 구직기회에 영향을 미치는 악순환은 심각한 단계에 도달했다/ The government and other concerned parties must stop the anachronistic recruiting practice for the future of our young generation./ 정부와 다른 관련 당사자들은 젊은 세대의 미래를 위해서 시대착오적인 직원선발 관행을 실행하지 못하도록 해야 한다/ There is no doubt that our country’s future rests on how to overcome the gloomy reality where simply parents’ wealth gap blocks their children’s upward mobility./ 우리나라의 미래가 단지 부모의 부 격차로 인해 자녀의 사회적 계층의 이동을 차단하는 우울한 현실을 어떻게 극복하느냐에 달려 있다는 것은 의심의 여지가 없다/
