SK E&C closes in on order for power plants in Chile

SK Engineering & Construction said it is poised to secure a $1.2 billion order from Chile after the company was selected priority negotiator for building a pair of coal thermal power plants.

The construction arm of SK Group said the deal would involve building two 375-megawatt thermal power plants in the Mejillones area, 1,200 kilometers (745 miles) north of Santiago. The project is issued by E-CL, an affiliate of GDF SUEZ, the largest civil energy producer in Europe.

SK E&C said it would manage engineering, procurement and construction, and test operation of the plants. The company expects to start construction early next year and finish within 40 months. SK E&C said it had been working more than four years to land a construction deal in Chile.
