A consortium of Hyundai Engineering & Construction and SK Engineering & Construction has secured a $697 million order to build a suspension bridge in Turkey.
Two companies will build a third bridge over the Bosphorus Strait in Istanbul on an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) basis by 2016.
The construction is expected to take 29 months after completion of foundation work for the main tower.
The 2.16 kilometer (1.34 mile) bridge will have traffic eight lanes and two rail tracks to connect Europe and Asia. Hyundai E&C said it will have a 60 percent stake in the project and the rest is held by SK E&C. The first bridge over the Bosphorus Strait was built by German and British firms in 1973, while the second bridge was completed by Japan and Italian builders in 1988. However, the third bridge will be much bigger than the previous ones, Hyundai E&C said.
