Court shows leniency on Daniel Chae

Daniel Chae of the boy band DMTN has been ordered to serve one year in prison by a Suwon court after he admitted to selling marijuana to his acquaintances from September to December last year.

He was also ordered to pay a 7.1 million won ($6,634) fine.

The court said he sold marijuana four times and arranged for meetings between buyers and sellers 12 times.

“Although the idea that smoking marijuana is illegal is getting weaker, it is still a crime,” the court said. “Selling or arranging sales [of the drug] is especially a serious criminal act.”

However, the judge said he was ordering the lightest punishment possible on the singer as he diligently answered the prosecutors’ questions and was active in the trial.

Cha No-ah, son of actor Cha Seung-won, who was charged with the possession of an illegal substance along with Daniel, was sentenced to six months in jail and was given 2 years’ probation.

A third celebrity who was involved in the scandal, Bianca Mobley, who became famous for appearing on the talk show “Chit Chat with Beautiful Ladies,” continues to refuse to return to Korea to face the illegal drug charges, so no decision on her was handed down.
