작은 집이 존경받는 사회가 된다면

참 묘한 이치 하나를 깨달았다. 공간이 줄면 결핍도 준다는 것. 지난해 봄 사옥 이전 후 개인 사무공간이 기존보다 절반 가까이 줄었다. 처음엔 걱정했었다. 살면서 공간이 줄어든 건 처음이었기 때문에. 예전엔 자신의 공간이 조금씩 늘어나는 게 발전의 척도라고 믿었다. 그러나 살아보니 공간이 준 만큼 편안함은 배가 됐다. 우선 단순하고 깨끗해졌다. 신문 쌓아둘 곳이 없으니 그날그날 부지런히 읽고 바로 버리는 게 가장 큰 이유일 거다. 비품도 줄고 쌓여 있는 짐도 줄었다. 주변이 단순해지니 공간에 대한 불만도 없어졌다.

이런 생각이 들었다. 공간이 넓을수록 휑한 공간에 결핍을 느껴 이를 채우기 위해 쓸데없는 물건을 들이고, 물건에 치여 신경 쓸 것도 많아진다는 것. 그래서 큰 집일수록 짐이 많고, 짐 때문에 공간이 부족해져 더 큰 집을 찾게 되는 것인지도 모른다. 실존주의자처럼 설명하자면, 공간이 클수록 상황은 결핍된 것이 아니나 의식이 결핍으로 느끼고 다시 그것을 채우려는 욕망으로 치닫는 악순환에 걸렸다고 할까.

　이런 이치를 먼저 깨달은 사람들은 많았다. 요즘 미국•일본 등지에서 벌어지는 ‘스몰하우스 운동’의 맥락도 비슷하다. 물건을 내려놓고 단순하게 살다 보면 무엇이 중요하고 행복한지 깨닫는다는 게 이들의 메시지다. 물론 이들은 극단적이다. 이 운동의 선구자 격인 미국의 제이 셰퍼는 주차장 한 구획보다 작은 집에 산단다. 이런 집들을 방문해 기록한 다카무라토모야는 ‘평균적인 집의 강박관념’이 삶의 질을 떨어뜨린다고 설파한다

지금 서울 관훈동에서 ‘최소의 집’ 전시회가 열린다기에 가봤다. 극단적이지 않은, 작은 집에 대한 몇몇 건축가의 아이디어를 볼 수 있었다. 한데 작은 집을 권유하는 이들의 방법은 실현하기엔 쉽지 않아 보였다. 그들은 하늘이 보이고 빛이 들어오는, 작은 집이 숨을 쉴 수 있는 공간에 짓는 집을 권한다. 그러나 보통 사람이 현실에서 작은 집을 위한 그런 쾌적한 땅을 어디서 찾나.

　현실에선 집이 자산이어서 한 뼘이라도 더 커야 한 푼이라도 더 벌고, 집의 크기로 성공의 크기를 재며, 작은 집에 사는 건 그 자체로 시대적•사회적 결핍이라고 주입된다. 집이 없으면 매번 높아지는 집세에 허리가 휘고, 전세대란은 정기적으로 반복되며 집 자체가 ‘실존적 상황’이 된 시대에 ‘욕심을 내려놓고 집의 크기를 줄이라’는 말 자체가 사치라고 반박해도 할 말이 없다.

모든 깨달음이 현실적 대안이 되진 않는다. 그럼에도 상상은 해본다. 우리 모두 생각을 고쳐먹어 집에 대한 고정관념에서 벗어나고 작은 집을 존경하게 된다면 집 문제도 좀 순해지지 않을까 하는….
