Chung, one of many retail industry executives summoned by lawmakers, said he will fold the group’s super supermarket business. “Our initial purpose was to share E-Mart’s competitiveness with small and midsize merchants,” the vice chairman said. “I didn’t know it would grow into such a social problem.” There has been growing criticism that super supermarkets are hurting mom-and-pop grocery stores.
