엄마는 자식을 위해 무슨 짓이든 해도 된다?

“자녀가 인터넷에서 무엇을 하는지 살피십시오. 부모는 자녀를 바르게 키울 도덕적 책임이 있습니다.”
 미국 플로리다주에서 벌어진 왕따 자살사건 수사책임자 그래디 저드가 TV 뉴스에서 단호한 표정으로 이렇게 말했을 때 지당한 말임에도 생경한 느낌이었다. 사건은 중학생 레베카 세드윅(12)에게 남자친구 문제로 갈등이 생긴 학교 선배와 친구들이 지속적으로 문자메시지와 페이스북을 통해 욕설을 하고 폭력을 가해 레베카가 지난주 투신자살을 하며 벌어졌다.
 
왕따 자살 사건이라면 우리에게도 생소하진 않다. 한데 이를 처리하는 미국의 방식은 달랐다. 경찰은 가해학생을 즉각 기소했다. 여기까진 우리도 비슷하다. 한데 미국의 여론은 제대로 가정교육을 못한 부모의 책임론을 강하게 거론했고, 경찰도 가해자인 딸을 감싼 부모에 대해 자녀의 비행 방조죄로 기소하겠다고 천명했다. 실제로 가해자 엄마는 이와 별건의 아동폭력 혐의로 체포됐다. 미성년 자녀가 나쁜 행동을 하면 부모도 응징해야 한다는 미국 내 공감대는 생각보다 폭넓었다. 학교폭력이 불거지면 ‘시스템’을 들먹이며 사회 탓부터 하는 우리와는 다른 접근법이다.
 
학교폭력 관련 상담을 하는 한 소년정신과 의사에게서 이런 말을 들은 적이 있다. “부모라는 이름으로 사악함을 정당화하는 부모가 많더라. 자식이 가해자인데도 자기 자식의 잘못엔 무감각하고 피해학생이 못난 탓을 하며, 심지어 피해자를 협박하기도 한다. 잘못을 지적하면 ‘엄마는 자식을 위해 무슨 짓을 해도 죄가 되지 않는다’고 주장한다.”
 
그와 얘기 끝에 파괴적 모성까지 ‘모성애’라는 이름으로 합리화하는 ‘모성 이데올로기’가 우리 사회에 만연한 것이 우리 아이들을 망치는 건 아닌지 의문이 들었다. 아이를 국제학교에 보내려고 국적을 세탁한 엄마, 성추행으로 기소된 아들을 감싸려고 피해자를 음해한 엄마, 자녀가 학교폭력에 연루되자 학교로 쳐들어가 교사를 무릎 꿇린 엄마 등 엽기적이고 파괴적인 모성애 사건은 넘친다.
 
최근 독일 앙겔라 메르켈 총리를 일러 ‘엄마 리더십’이라고 한다. 메르켈 리더십을 엄마에 비유하는 건 ‘포용’ 정신 때문이다. 민생과 국익을 위해선 정파적 이해를 떠나 야당의 이슈도 수용하는 정치가 바로 엄마의 정신이라는 것이다. 이렇게 엄마라는 개념은 배타적 욕망을 절제하고 포용과 평화와 안정을 추구함을 의미한다. 내 자식의 이익을 위해 남의 자식은 밟고, 자식의 전사가 되어 대신 싸우는 투사는 ‘엄마’라는 개념과 상치된다. 엄마는 자녀를 위해 무슨 짓이든 해도 되는 사람이 아니라 ‘자녀를 바르게 키울 도덕적 책임이 있는 사람’이라는 미국 시골 경찰관의 말을 왠지 다시 한번 되뇌게 된다.
