A worrisome deviation

Religious leaders often go way beyond the bounds of their profession. Some members of the Catholic Priests’ Association for Justice in Korea have fueled an ongoing political battle. In a politically motivated Mass, the priests denounced state agencies’ alleged meddling in last year’s presidential election and urged President Park Geun-hye to step down. On North Korea’s 2010 shelling of Yeonpyeong Island, a priest even said, “What if the Korea-U.S. joint military drills continue on an island near the controversial Northern Limit Line? What should North Korea do? They should shoot. And that was the shelling on Yeonpyeong Island.”

That sounds like an assertion that North Korea rightfully counterattacked the South as we would do if Japan conducted a drill around the Dokdo islets in the East Sea. The priest’s remarks suggest an approval of the North’s bombardment of the islands and our illegitimate occupation of them. We are dumbfounded at this distorted perspective on the North’s reckless provocation. Can our Catholic priests express such a skewed view just a day before the third anniversary (Nov. 23) of the tragedy?

They have never blamed the regime in Pyongyang for its inexorable human rights abuses. Their ideological inclination can be understood by the stunning remarks of a priest who expressed regret for the 1994 death of North Korean leader Kim Il Sung on a visit to his tomb in Pyongyang.

The priests’ group also demanded that President Park resign over the National Intelligence Service’s online campaigns for her in last year’s presidential election. State agencies’ alleged intervention in the election is undergoing judicial review. Punishment of those involved will be made depending on the court’s judgment. The priests’ plea for the president’s resignation is not only wrong but a dereliction of their duty as clergymen. Even the DP now is attempting to draw a line between its once-sympathetic position and the priests’ radical departure.

Despite the Catholic Church’s ban on priests’ political engagement, some members of the association openly violate the decree, not to mention the Constitution, which upholds the separation of church and state. Priests are spiritual leaders for ordinary Catholics. Given their influence on their followers, they should propagate a message of love and peace at the center of a discord-ridden society.

Andrew Yeom Soo-jung, the archbishop of Seoul, warned of the possibility of a religious division in the Catholic Church due to the priests’ proactive participation in politics. The priests’ group must listen to such warnings.

일부이겠지만 정치의 영역에 발을 디디려는 종교인들의 월경(越境) 행위가 슬슬 도를 넘고 있다. 특히 지난주 천주교 정의구현사제단 전주 교구 대표들의 시국미사는 정치갈등의 새 불씨를 지피는 지경에 이르렀다. 불법선거 규탄과 대통령 사퇴 촉구라는 미사의 취지 자체가 고도의 정치성을 지녔다.
미사 도중 한 신부는 북한의 연평도 포격 도발에 대해 이렇게 말했다. “NLL(서해 북방한계선) 문제 있는 땅에서 한·미 군사운동을 계속하면 북한에서 어떻게 하겠어요? 북한에서 쏴야죠. 그것이 연평도 포격사건이에요.”
일본이 독도에서 훈련하면 우리가 당연히 쏴야 하듯 북한도 당연히 쐈다는 뜻이다. 그의 발언 맥락을 보면 마치 우리가 연평도를 불법 점거하고 있는 듯 비친다. 또 그 근처에서 우리가 미국과 군사훈련을 했으니 북한이 쏠 만도 했다는 얘기가 된다. 전사자와 그 유가족, 그리고 군 장병들의 심경은 눈꼽 만큼도 배려하지 않은 채 북한의 비인륜적 도발에 우리가 원인을 제공했다고 탓한 것이다. 이게 대한민국의 신부가, 그것도 연평도 도발 3주기를 하루 앞두고 입에 담을 수 있는 말인가.
반면 그들은 인권이란 개념조차 없는 북한의 세습정권에 대해선 비판하지 않았다. 하기야 정의구현사제단 소속의 한 신부는 과거 방북 당시 김일성 묘지를 참배하곤 “장군님, 조금만 오래 사시지 아쉽습니다”고 했다 하니 그들의 국가관과 이념적 방향성을 잘 알 수 있다.
정의구현사제단 미사에선 박근혜 대통령의 하야론도 나왔다. 국가정보원 댓글 사건이 선거 부정이므로 당선을 인정할 수 없다는 논리인 듯하다. 야당도 넘지 않으려는 ‘대선 불복’의 선을 훌쩍 넘어선 셈이다. 국가기관의 대선 개입 의혹에 대해선 현재 사법절차가 진행 중이다. 그 결과에 따라 진상규명과 책임자 처벌이 이뤄질 전망이다. 그런데도 신부들이 나서서 대통령의 하야를 주장하는 것은 사제의 본분을 망각한 처사다. 처음엔 사제들의 말에 귀 기울이라고 거들던 민주당도 논란이 커지자 뒤늦게 선을 그으려 할 정도다.
가톨릭교회 교리서 2442항은 “정치구조나 사회생활의 조직에 직접 개입하는 것은 교회 사목자들이 할 일이 아니다”로 시작한다. 사제의 직접적인 정치 개입을 금지한 것이다. 공공연히 정치활동을 하는 정의구현사제단의 일부 신부들은 이를 위반하고 있다. 정교(政敎) 분리를 명시한 헌법 정신에도 어긋난다.
사제들은 일반 신도들의 정신적 지도자다. 신도들의 가치관과 여론 형성에 큰 영향을 준다. 따라서 사제들은 갈등으로 얼룩진 사회의 중심에 서서 사랑과 평화를 전파할 책무를 진다. 과연 정의구현사제단의 시국미사는 저주와 선동을 배격하고 사랑과 평화를 전했다고 볼 수 있나.
어제 천주교 서울대교구장 염수정 대주교는 강론을 통해 이렇게 말했다. “요한 바오로 2세 교황님이 발표한 ‘사제의 직무와 생활지침’에서도 정치나 사회활동에 적극적으로 개입함으로써 교회적 친교의 분열을 야기할 수 있음을 경고하셨습니다.” 편향적인 정치행보를 하고 있는 사제들이 깊이 숙고해야 할 말씀이다.
