수능 끝난 직후가 성형수술 적기라는데…
‘수능성형’이라는 말이 등장한 지는 꽤 됐다. 수능이 막 끝난 딸의 눈 성형수술을 해주었다는 한 지인에게서 이 용어를 처음 들은 게 6~7년 전쯤 된다. 당시 성형외과들이 수험생 할인 프로모션을 도입해 딸 친구들이 줄줄이 성형수술을 한다는데 자기만 안 해줄 수 없더라고 했다. 또 ‘자녀에게 빛나는 미래를 선물하라’는 식의 광고를 보고 있자면 ‘떨어지는 외모’로 낳은 부모로서 죄의식까지 생길 지경이더라는 거다. 사실 요즘 수능성형은 아무도 말릴 수 없다. 고등학교 졸업식에 가서 친구들끼리 서로 얼굴을 몰라봤다는 얘기도 나올 정도이니….수능이 끝나고 ‘수능성형’철이 돌아왔다. 성형외과만 250여 개 몰려 있다는 압구정역 주변에서 음식점•미용실•성형외과들이 수능프로모션을 내걸고 있는 걸 보자면 이 거리 전체가 ‘수능특화거리’같다는 생각마저 든다. 요즘 이곳 성형외과들이 내놓은 프로모션의 주 내용은 ‘수능성형 할인행사’다. 할인폭을 30~50%로 제시하고, 눈+코 또는 V라인 패키지 등 각종 패키지 상품을 내놓고, 여러 명이 할수록 값이 싸지는 일종의 ‘공동구매’ 프로모션도 있다. 요즘 ‘수능성형’의 대세는 수험생에게 국한하지 않는다. 수험생+엄마 패키지 상품도 많다. 실제로 강남에선 중년 주부가 예뻐지면 ‘저 엄마, 아이들 수능 끝났구나’라고 한단다. 수능에서 해방된 엄마들이 드디어 외모 가꾸기에 나서기 때문이란다. 보톡스•필러 등 소위 ‘쁘띠성형’의 주 고객이 수능 끝난 엄마들이라 이래저래 이 즈음엔 성형외과가 대목이다.
요즘엔 성형수술에 대한 도덕적 비판도 많이 수그러들었다. 기껏해야 무딘 ‘한탄’ 정도다. 수능성형과 관련된 보도 내용도 어떤 상품을 골라야 하는지를 알려주는 정보성 기사가 많다. 그럼에도 걱정이 되는 건 이런 거다. 최근 출근길 버스에서 나를 한숨짓게 하는 광경이 있다. 의자 등받이에 있는 성형외과 광고인데, 거기엔 한 여성의 수술 전후 사진이 있다. 한데 내 눈엔 전 사진이 훨씬 개성 있고 인상도 또렷이 기억에 남아 예뻐 보인다. 반면 후 사진은 객관적으로 예뻐졌지만 걸그룹 연예인처럼 흔해서 구별이 안 간다.
성형을 반대하거나 비난하진 않는다. 다만 시험 공부하느라 자신의 외모와 개성에 대해 충분히 연구할 시간이 없었던 수험생들이 평생 가는 얼굴을 대목철에 패키지로 찍어내듯 ‘이 시대 유행을 창조하시는 의느님(의사+하느님)’ 손에 맡겨 ‘의란성 쌍둥이’ 대열에 가담하는 게 찜찜할 뿐이다. 수능 공부하듯 외모를 연구하고 자신이 원하는 미래에 대해 생각해보고 난 뒤 결정해도 늦지 않다는 말이다. 되돌릴 수 없는 일은 너무 서두르지 않는 게 현명하다. 나는 너무 소중하니까….
