The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said it will crack down on excess energy use starting Monday as part of efforts to prevent a winter power shortage crisis.
The ministry will regulate temperatures of public institutions to 18 degrees Celsius (64.4 degrees Fahrenheit) until Feb. 28. Employees can’t use individual heating equipment during working hours. Ministry officials will clamp down on stores that use heaters while windows are open. Fines up to 3 million won ($2,853) will be imposed starting from Jan. 2. When caught the first time, the ministry will give a warning. A second violation will bring a 500,000 won fine.
