SK Lubricants will provide component of GM’s engine oil

SK Lubricants, an affiliate of SK Innovation, said yesterday it has been selected as a transmission and engine oil lubricant provider by General Motors.

Starting in 2014, the company said it will supply 280,000 barrels of lubricants over three years for GM to make its own transmission oil brand “Dexron VI” and engine oil “Dexos 1.” This is enough to manufacture products for two million vehicles in a year, SK Lubricants said.

For transmission oil, the company has been supplying its lubricant to GM since 2009, and it succeeded in renewing that contract.

This is the first time it signed an engine oil lubricant deal.

Since the engine oil market is 50 times larger than for transmission oil, SK Lubricants said it will focus on securing contacts with other carmakers.
