핸젤과 그레텔에서 애들을 내다버린 이는 계모 아닌 친부모였다

믿고 싶지 않은 일이다. 재혼한 남편의 10살배기 딸에게 소금과 대변 등을 먹여 학대하다 끝내 숨지게 한 50대 여인. 울산시 울주군에서는 동거남의 8살짜리 딸을 상습적으로 때리고, 갈비뼈 16개를 부러뜨려 사망하게 한 엄마도 있었다. 울주 사건에는 아동학대 아닌 살인 혐의가 적용됐다.

　하필이면 둘 다 계모다. 인터넷에는 ‘계모학대’ ‘울주계모’ 등의 검색어가 상위에 올랐다. 친자식이 아니니 저런 짓을 했을 거라는 ‘팥쥐엄마 프레임’이다.

　사실 악독한 계모 이미지는 전래동화나 민담에서 흔히 발견된다. ‘콩쥐팥쥐’ ‘장화홍련’ ‘백설공주’ ‘신데렐라’가 다 그렇다. 아버지는 계모의 술수에 눈멀고, 착하고 예쁜 딸은 모진 구박을 받는다. 계모는 아니지만 어린 심청에게 젖엄마가 돼준 뺑덕어멈도 꽤나 이기적인 여자로 그려진다.

　계모에 대한 이런 부정적 이미지는 혈연 중심 가족주의를 강화한다. 피가 섞여야 진짜 가족, 안 섞이면 영원한 타자, 피를 나눈 사람들끼리 똘똘 뭉쳐 철옹성을 쌓자는 순혈주의적 가족주의의 출발이다.

그러나 이미 알려진 대로 동화 속 계모의 악행은 100% 진짜가 아니다. 예부터 전해진 ‘잔혹하고 야한 성인용 이야기’들을 채록해 아동용 동화로 전승하는 과정에서 각색이 일어났다. 원래는 친엄마의 소행을 어린이 독자의 심적 충격을 고려해 계모로 바꾸는 식이다. 실제 그림형제 ‘핸젤과그레텔’의 원 버전에서 남매를 숲에 갖다 버리는 사람은 계모 아닌 친부모였다. 이 버전을 국내 번역하는 과정에서도 웃지 못할 일이 있었다. “친엄마가 애를 버린다는 게 말이 안 되니 다시 계모로 하자”며 꽤나 설왕설래했다는 것이다.

　한 아동복지 전문가는 SNS에 “비슷한 시기 친부가 골프채로 아이를 폭행•사망케 한 사건은 묻혔다. 오직 계모 사건에만 관심이 몰린다”고 썼다. 통계에 따르면 아동학대 사망사건의 가해자는 친부>친모>계모>계부 순. 그것도 친부모가 계부모보다 3배나 많다. 그는 또 “이런 계모사건의 경우 대부분 친부는 무죄다. 전화하면 ‘내 자식 내 방식대로 가르치는데 왜 끼어드느냐’며 난리를 친다. 나중엔 몰랐다고, 같이 살면서 오랜 학대를 모른다는 것 자체가 방임이고 유죄 아닌가”라고도 했다.

　안 그래도 재혼, 비혈연 대안가족 등이 날로 많아지는 가운데 언제까지 계모 탓을 할 것인가. 그녀의 악행이 문제지 그녀가 계모인 것이 문제는 아니다. 누구든 ‘죽이든 살리든 내 자식 내 맘대로’라는 생각 자체가 문제다. 게다가 ‘장화홍련’이나 ‘백설공주’나 제일 속 터지는 캐릭터는 수수방관 무책임한 친부들이고 말이다.

Stories are often dramatized in the course of ⓐadapting the “cruel and racy grownup tales” for ⓑyounger readers. ⓒIn order to prevent shocks on children, the evil acts of the real mothers were changed to ⓓstepmothers’ deeds. In fact, in the original ⓔ “Hansel and Gretel” by Brothers Grimm, it is not the stepmother but the real parents who abandon the kids in the forest. When the original version was being translated into Korean, there was a debate that whether to keep the modified version of having the stepmother abandon the children should be kept as it wouldn’t be appropriate to depict the real mother to do such a thing.
