Reality TV finds success in the family

테스트

If reality shows in the past focused on the hip and the glamorous, then this year it was all about keeping it in the family as both children and aged stars were given some of the limelight.

Two of the biggest reality shows of 2013 were MBC’s “Dad, Where Are You Going?” and tvN’s “Grandpas Over Flowers.” Both proved that people are interested in the overlooked stars and their family members.

“Dad, Where Are You Going?” chronicled the lives of celebrity dads as they juggle stardom and unruly kids.

The formula for presenting the domestic side of these entertainers was such a success that the kids and dads went on to land advertising gigs. MBC also sold the rights to a Chinese network to produce and air the program.

Meanwhile, “Grandpas Over Flowers” captured the childlike side of the septuagenarian actors Lee Soon-jae, Shin Goo, Park Geun-hyeong, Baek Il-sub and Lee Seo-jin as they backpacked around Europe.

The program did so well that it spawned a spinoff titled “Sisters Over Flowers.”

The formula was the same, but “Sisters” focused on actresses from their 40s to their 60s, traveling to Croatia with the help of a hapless Lee Seung-gi.
