Sad marriages in Elysee Palace
Elysee Palace, the official residence of French presidents, is named after Elysium, where dead heroes go in the afterlife. But it would not be a happy place for wives, as beautiful women and wine are abundant. Similarly, many of France’s first ladies have not had happy marriages in Elysee Palace.
Charles de Gaulle’s wife Yvonne lived in the shadow of her short-tempered husband, who was not content with the presidential residence. Only when de Gaulle left the Elysee and returned to his hometown could she relax.
To Claude Pompidou, Georges Pompidou’s wife and second first lady of the Fifth Republic, Elysee Palace did not leave fond memories because her husband died in office of a rare blood cancer.
Anne-Aymone Giscard d’Estaing refused to live in Elysee Palace, saying it was not suitable for raising her four children. Her husband, President Valery Giscard d’Estaing enjoyed his freedom and would drive his Ferrari to see his girlfriend. Danielle Mitterrand did not live in the Elysee either. Life in the palace would have been too restrictive for the Socialist activist, plus President Francois Mitterrand needed space for his extramarital affair.
Cecilia Sarkozy was a free spirit who said that she found the palace annoying. She left Nicolas Sarkozy six months into his presidency for another man. But Carla Bruni-Sarkozy enjoyed her life at Elysee and married Nicolas on the second floor.
Bernadette Chirac was by far the happiest first lady in Elysee Palace. She tended the gardens and provided support for President Jacques Chirac, who also loved the presidential residence.
Valerie Trierweiler may have dreamed of a happy life in the palace, but now is living a nightmare. She is the domestic partner of President Francois Hollande, but he is now apparently in a relationship with an actress. Francois Hollande may be the least macho president in the history of France. He almost entered Elysee not as the president but as the husband of the president, as his former longtime-partner Segolene Royal ran for office. Now, he is about to invite another first lady to the macho paradise of Elysee. But it is too early to know if she will be happy there.

생각보다 프랑스는 마초사회다. 국회의원이나 기업간부의 여성비율이 유럽연합에서 늘 바닥이었다. 남녀동수법이란 것도 그래서 생겼지만 잘 지켜지지 않는다. 프랑스인들의 사생활 존중도 따지고 보면 마초 문화의 산물이다. 사람들이 관심 가질만한 게 고위층의 사생활인데 고위층은 대부분 남자니 사생활에 관심 끄라는 얘기다. 프랑스 대통령 관저인 엘리제궁은 이름부터 마초다. 엘리제란 전쟁에서 죽은 전사들이 가는 극락을 말한다. 미녀와 와인이 넘쳐나는 곳에서 아내들이 행복하기란 쉽지 않은 일이다. 그래선지 프랑스의 퍼스트레이디들은 대체로 엘리제궁과 좋은 인연을 맺지 못했다. 국민 영웅과 함께 살았던 이본 드골은 특히 그랬다. 엘리제궁을 마뜩찮게 여긴 남편의 불 같은 성격을 군소리 없이 받아내며 그림자처럼 살았다. 1969년 드골이 엘리제를 떠나 귀향하고 나서야 큰소리로 숨을 쉴 수 있었다고 한다. 5공화국의 두 번째 퍼스트레이디인 클로드 퐁피두에게 엘리제는 최악의 장소였다. 희귀병으로 급서한 반려자를 잃은 삭막한 기억만이 남았다. 이후 숱한 초대에도 불구, 단 한 발짝도 엘리제에 들여놓지 않았다. 안에몬 지스카르 데스탱은 아예 엘리제에 들어가길 거부했다. 네 자녀와 살만한 공간이 아니라는 이유였다. 엘리제에는 사무실만 마련해 두고 필요할 때마다 출퇴근했다. 덕분에 자유스러워진 대통령은 혼자 페라리를 몰고 애인 집을 드나들었다. 다니엘 미테랑 역시 엘리제에 들어가지 않았다. 열렬한 사회주의 운동가였던 그녀에게 엘리제궁은 제약이자 장애물일 뿐이었다. 어쩌면 엘리제의 주인이 되기 전부터 두 집 살림을 해온 남편과 떨어져 있을 수 있는 훌륭한 기회였을 지도 모르겠다. 세실리아 사르코지는 가장 자유로운 영혼이었다. “엘리제궁이 나를 짜증나게 한다”고 대놓고 말했다. 실은 엘리제보다 남편이 더 싫었다. 그래서 6개월 만에 짐을 싸 애인 곁으로 떠나버렸다. 그녀 대신 들어온 브루니 사르코지는 나름 엘리제를 즐겼다. 하긴 2층에서 결혼식까지 올렸으니 추억이 남다를 터다. 엘리제궁에서 가장 행복했던 퍼스트레이디는 누가 뭐래도 베르나데트 시락이었다. 엘리제궁 정원을 자신의 기호대로 가꾸며 역대 대통령 중 엘리제를 가장 좋아했던 남편의 내조에 최선을 다했다. 같은 행복을 꿈꾸며 엘리제의 안주인이 된 발레리 트리에바일레르는 악몽을 꾸고 있다. 동거 중인 대통령한테 영화배우 새 애인이 생기는 바람에 자칫 쫓겨날 상황에 처했다. 프랑수아 올랑드는 역대 대통령 중 가장 덜 마초인 사람이다. 대통령이 아니라 대통령 남편으로 엘리제에 들어갈 뻔도 했다. 그런 그가 마초들의 천국인 엘리제에 또 한 명의 퍼스트레이디를 초대하려 하고 있다. 그녀가 행복할진 두고 봐야 알 일이다. 이훈범 국제부장
