노트르담과 이세 신궁 그리고 숭례문

프랑스어에 “107년을 기다린다”는 표현이 있다. 100년도 아니고 굳이 107년인 이유가 있다. 파리의 노트르담 대성당을 짓는 데 걸린 햇수다. 12세기 대표적 고딕양식 건축물이 그래서 나왔다. 성과를 얻으려면 그만큼 성의가 필요하다는 함의가 담겼다.

 일본의 이세 신궁은 지난해 새로 지었다. 그런데도 신토(神道) 건축의 정수로 일컬어진다. 일본 건축의 뿌리를 알려는 발걸음이 줄을 잇는다. 비밀은 옛 방식 고수에 있다.

 이세 신궁은 목조건물이다. 그래서 오래가지 못한다. 관리하는 승려들이 아이디어를 냈다. 사원을 주기적으로 허물고 그 옆에 새로 짓는 것이다. 처음 썼던 나무를 벤 숲에서 다시 나무를 잘라와 똑같은 설계도에 따라 세운다. 20년에 한 번씩 새로 짓는데 이를 시키넨센구(式年遷宮)라 한다. 그렇게 해서 1300년이 넘도록 지금의 자리를 지키고 있다.

 알다시피 노트르담은 석조건물이다. 그렇다고 세월의 무게를 이겨내진 못했다. 1804년 나폴레옹 대관식 때는 벽이 너무 낡아 태피스트리로 가려야 했다. 허물고 새로 짓자는 의견도 있었다. 그걸 살린 게 빅토르위고였다. 소설 『파리의 노트르담』으로 하루아침에 흉물에서 명물로 바꿔놓았다. 복구와 증축이 이어졌고 오늘날의 모습이 된 건 19세기의 일이다.

 짓는 데 100년도 더 걸린 게 꼭 성의 때문만은 아니다. 당시 기술력이 그만했던 게 더 큰 이유일 터다. 19세기의 증축엔 훨씬 짧은 시간이 걸렸다. 성의가 작아서가 아니라 건축기술이 발전한 덕분인 거다. 오늘날 프랑스는 첨단 공법을 사용해 보수를 하고 석조건물 벽의 때를 벗긴다.

 20년마다 새로 짓기란 보통 번거로운 일이 아니다. 벌목에서부터 이사까지 8년이 걸리는 대역사다. 하지만 신궁 보수는 물론 목장의 기술 전수, 전통 중시, 이벤트를 통한 신심 고취, 관광객 유치 효과들을 따지면 밑지는 장사가 아니다.

 돌로 100년을 짓든 나무로 20년마다 짓든 무에 다르랴. 서로 강점을 취해 최대 성과를 얻었을 따름인 것을. 그래서 우리의 숭례문이 더 안타깝다. 금강송이든 천연안료든 선택은 오직 ‘속도’였다. 그래서 전통도 첨단도 아니고 의식도 효율도 놓친, 자부 아닌 자괴가 되고 말았다. 뻔한 결과였는데도 수사다 뭐다 봉창을 두드리고 뒷북을 친다.

 숭례문의 자긍심 회복을 위해서라도 해체하고 처음부터 다시 짓는 건 어떨지. 전통일지 첨단일지 확실히 정하고 말이다. 21세기에 걸맞은 기술과 재료로 창조형 복원을 하는 것도 나쁘지 않을 터다. 전통을 고수한다면 벌채와 나무 말리기부터 제대로 해야 한다. 복원 과정 전체를 관광코스로 만들어보는 것도 괜찮겠다. 1882년 시작해서 여전히 짓고 있는 바르셀로나의 사그라다파밀리아 성당처럼 말이다.
