‘Miss Granny’ leads big weekend for local films

The Lunar New Year holiday was a time not only for families but also for trips to the cinema, and Korean films took five of the top six spots at the box office.

Leading the way was “Miss Granny,” topping the box office in its second weekend. The comedy about an old woman who finds herself back in the body of her youth drew in nearly 1.8 million admissions from Friday to Sunday. To date, the film has had more than 3.9 million admissions, earning 28.7 billion won, or $26.5 million.

Slipping to second place was the Disney animation “Frozen,” which drew in roughly 1.6 million people over the three-day period. The musical cartoon has made more than 47.7 billion won in Korea since it opened on Jan. 16. It surpassed the 6 million admissions mark on Sunday, becoming the most-watched animated film in Korea, a record previously held by “Kung Fu Panda 2.”

Trailing far behind was “Man in Love” starring Hwang Jung-min, which drew in just over 340,000 admissions. The fourth to sixth spots were also Korean movies - “Hot Young Bloods,” “The Attorney” and “The Huntresses.”
