Silver medalist goes out in golden style

The three members separated and went on to have separate careers in music. Their shocking exit certainly suited their nickname - “X-generation icons.” The decade of ideology was over, and in the 1990s, they opened the era of culture and individuality. Then, they chose freedom over wealth, fame, fandom and social expectations. Aside from the female celebrities who marry into wealthy families, it was, and still is, very rare for stars to voluntarily abandon their stardom. Their exit was just as “problematic” as their debut.
The last performance of Kim Yu-na at the Sochi Winter Olympics was even more impressive. While she lost the gold medal, ironically, we got to see a more memorable scene.
At the kiss-and-cry zone, Kim smiled when her score was announced. Instead of the frustration and anger that all of us shared, she responded with a smile. She was just as composed at the ceremony. She was so mature when accepting the outcome after doing her best. How could such a young soul be so composed?
Kim’s smile is the essence of the countless messages that the figure skating queen has sent us for the last seven years. She has reminded us of many values. She has proved that the purest form of beauty and art can evoke tears. We have learned that she has reached the highest level of art and technique by performing so naturally and at ease, and it was the outcome of intense training and strict self-control. Standing in front of thousands of audience members in the vast ice rink, she overcame the extreme pressure by presenting the moves that have been engraved in her body through countless repetitions and practices.
She made her exit with a smile, not regret. In her game of life regardless of the scores, she fought against herself and overcame her limits. That’s why she could say, “I did all I can.”
At age 24, she has become a great teacher to us all and gave us an opportunity to look back on our attitude in life. That’s why we feel so moved. “Thank you, Yu-na” was the most searched word on the Internet all day long.
Someone said, “There’s no need to visit the museum to see an artwork. Kim is the art.” It was the most beautiful retirement in the world.

지금껏 내게 가장 인상적인 은퇴는 1996년 서태지와 아이들의 은퇴였다. 데뷔 5년 최정상의 위치에서 전격 은퇴를 선언했다. “새로움에 대한 부담감과 창작의 고통”이 이유였다. “화려할 때 미련없이 떠나고 싶다”고도 했다. 물론 훗날 멤버 3인이 제각각 활동을 재기하기는 했지만 ‘문화대통령’ ‘X세대의 아이콘’으로 불렸던 그들다운 파격적인 퇴장이었다. 거대 이념의 시대인 80년대를 지나 90년대 문화와 개인의 시대를 열었던 이들은 부와 명성, 심지어 팬들의 사랑이나 사회적 기대를 뒤로하고 ‘자유’를 택했다. 그때까지만 해도 재벌가에 시집가는 여자 스타들이라면 모를까, 최정상에서 스스로 떠나는 모습은 드물었다(지금도 비슷하다). 그들의 등장만큼이나 ‘문제적’인 은퇴였다. 어제 새벽 소치 겨울올림픽에서 김연아의 마지막 무대도 그 못지않았다. 아니 그를 훌쩍 뛰어넘었다. 금메달을 빼앗겨 아쉬웠지만, 역설적이게도 금메달을 빼앗겼기에 더욱 잊을 수 없는 명장면을 연출했다. 키스 앤 크라이 석의 김연아는 점수가 발표되는 순간 웃었다. 당연히 있을 법한 분한 감정 대신 미소로 응수했다. 시상식에서도 마찬가지였다. 그저 최선을 다하고 그 결과를 받아들이는 성숙함이 느껴졌다. 도대체, 아직은 소녀라고 불러도 좋을 저 어린 영혼의 어디서 그런 담대함과 초연함이 나오는 것일까. 김연아의 웃음은 그녀가 피겨 퀸으로 사랑받은 지난 7년간 우리에게 던진 숱한 메시지의 정점 같은 것이다. 그녀는 그간 우리에게 수많은 것을 일깨웠다. 지극한 아름다움, 예술의 절정은 절로 보는 이의 눈물을 핑 돌게 한다는 것을 알게 했다. 얼핏 쉬워 보일 정도로 편안한 자연스러움이 예술(혹은 기술)의 최고 경지라는 것도 알게 했다. 또 이 모든 것이 혹독한 훈련과 자기 통제의 결과임도 깨우쳐줬다. 수천의 관중 앞, 거대한 링크에 홀로 던져졌을 때 극도의 압박감을 이기는 것은 오직 반복 연습을 통해 몸에 각인된 동작들의 힘이라는 것 말이다. 그리고 그녀의 퇴장은 분루(憤淚) 아닌 웃음이었다. 세상의 평가 따위는 무관하게 피겨라는 인생의 레이스에서 오직 자기와 싸워 자기를 극복한 자만이 스스로를 격려하며 할 수 있는 말, “할 수 있는 건 다 했다”와 함께다. 이제 스물네 살 그녀는 우리 모두에게 스스로의 삶을, 스스로의 치열함을 되돌아보게 하는 큰 스승이 되었다. 어쩐지 김연아를 생각하면 가슴이 뭉클해지는 이유다. ‘연아야 고마워’라는 검색어가 종일 인터넷 실시간 검색어 상위를 달리는 이유다. 누군가 “미술품을 보러 전시장에 가지 말라. 김연아가 그냥 예술”이라고 했던가. 세상에서 가장 아름다운 은퇴식. 은메달의 연아가 그 어느 때보다 아름답다. 글=양성희 문화스포츠부문 부장대우
