꿈의 대결 덕분에 TV 리모컨을 되찾았다
지난 26일 일요일 오후. 만사 제쳐 두고 TV 앞을 지켰다. 실로 오랜만에 아내와 아이로부터 리모컨을 되찾은 건, 순전히 바둑 한 판 때문이었다.한국 이세돌 9단과 중국 구리(古力) 9단의 10번기. 두 나라의 고수가 10번을 내리 싸워 끝장을 보는 승부다. 승자는 국제기전 최고 상금인 500만 위안(약 8억7000만원)을 거머쥐고 패자에게는 경비에 해당하는 20만 위안(약 3500만원)만 주어진다. 돈도 돈이지만, 두 기사 모두 자타가 공인하는 절대 고수인지라 패배하는 쪽은 치명적일 수 있다.
그래, 오랫동안 기다렸다. 모름지기 승부란 이래야 한다. 천하를 양분한 두 패자가 백척간두(百尺竿頭)에 서서 모든 걸 걸고 싸워야 한다. 미적지근하면 승부가 아니다. 한쪽이 쓰러져야 승부다. 무협지에나 나올 법한 얘기지만, 이 가혹한 치킨게임은 1930∼50년대 일본에서 실제로 벌어진 대결방식이다. 두 고수가 10번 겨뤄 4승 이상 차이로 이기면 상수(上手)가 되어 천하를 호령했고, 지면 하수(下手)의 비참한 삶을 살았다.
나에게도 바둑책 껴안고 잠들던 시절이 있었다. 그 시절의 기보(棋譜)는 세상의 어떤 텍스트보다 내 상상력을 자극했다. 바둑에 제한시간이 없던 옛날, 한 고수가 며칠을 장고하다 새벽에 발견한 묘수로 판세를 일거에 뒤집었다는 일화까지 얹히면 내 상상은 한도 끝도 없이 뻗어나갔다.
요즘 바둑은 옛날 같은 호방한 맛이 덜하다. 바둑이 스포츠가 된 건 시대 흐름이라지만, TV 중계시간에 쫓겨 제한시간이 줄면서 바둑은 최선의 한 수보다 최소한의 실수가 더 중요한 게임이 돼 버렸다. 바둑은 게임 이전에 기(氣)와 도(道)라 배웠는데, 요즘 바둑에선 종종 안전 제일주의의 처세술이 읽힌다.
그래서 이번 10번기가 더 반갑다. 요즘은 어지간한 국제기전도 길어야 3시간 제한시간을 두는데, 이번 대국은 4시간이나 된다. 지쳐 쓰러질 때까지 싸우는 것이다. 대국 내용도 꿈의 대결다웠다. 이세돌의 칼이 구리의 목을 겨누나 했더니, 구리의 칼이 이세돌의 다리를 베고 있었다. 이윽고 전장의 먼지가 가라앉았다. 무릎 꿇은 구리가 보였다. 첫 수를 착점하고 9시간이 지난 뒤였다.
바둑을 모르신다고? 괜찮다. 정석•수순•장고•수읽기•패착•복기•꼼수•악수…. 이 어휘를 구사할 정도면 관전할 자격이 충분하다. 전부 다 바둑용어다. 오래전부터 바둑은 우리네 일상 깊숙이서 살고 있다.
앞으로 매달 마지막 일요일 오후는 어떻게든 비워둘 참이다. 다신 못 볼지 모를 꿈의 대결을 향한 최소한의 예의다. 그렇다고 문제가 없는 건 아니다. 아내와 아이로부터 리모컨을 지킬 자신이 없다. 매번 리모컨과 신용카드를 맞바꿀 수도 없는 노릇이고. 묘수가 필요하다.
