마크와 페이스북 팀으로부터 깜짝 놀랄 선물을 받은 나
요 며칠 새 페이스북에 가장 많이 올라온 동영상은 ‘룩 백(look back)’이다. 10주년을 맞은 페이스북이 그들의 이용자들에게 한 일종의 ‘깜짝 선물’이다. ‘회원님을 주인공으로 한 동영상이 준비되었습니다’라는 글과 함께 게시된 링크를 클릭하면 1분짜리 동영상이 흘러나온다.자기가 주인공이다. 페이스북 가입 시기부터, 그간 올린 내 글과 사진들이 배경 음악과 함께 흘러나온다. 나도 잊고 있던 내 삶의 하이라이트. 정확히는 페이스북 버전의 내 기록영화다. 동영상 아래에는 ‘마크와 페이스북 팀으로부터’란 글이 달려 있다. 아시겠지만 페이스북 창립자 마크 저커버그다.
일단 사람들의 반응은 ‘뭉클’ ‘감동’이다. 자기가 주인공인 드라마를 봤으니 당연하다. 가물가물한 기억을 되살리는 재미다. 자녀 사진을 많이 올린 사람들은 자녀가 성장한 모습만으로도 감탄이 나온다.
‘대단하다’란 반응도 쏟아졌다. 특히 고객 맞춤형 감성 마케팅이란 측면이 주목받았다. 10주년 기념 이벤트로 고객 한 사람 한 사람에게 소중한 기억을 되돌려 마음을 움직였으니, 이런 게 바로 ‘대박’이란 것이다. 게다가 ‘마크와 페이스북 팀으로부터’란다. 단순히 기계가 알아서 해주는 자동편집의 결과물이지만 마치 ‘너를 위해 내가 준비했어’ 같은 일대일 관계의 환상을 불러일으킨다. 동영상의 엔딩은, 페이스북이 만들어 낸 최고의 아이콘인 ‘좋아요’ 손가락 표시다.
그 다음 반응은 당연히 ‘무섭다’는 것이다. 페이스북이 궁극적으로 지향하는 것 중 하나가 온라인상 개인 아카이브 구축이니 그럴 만하다. 모두의 역사를 페이스북 담벼락에, 그것도 자발적으로 남기게 하는 것이다. 디지털 일기장을 한곳에 취합해 놓은 야심 찬 프로젝트다. 나보다 나를 더 잘 기억하는 페이스북이라, 섬뜩한 기분이 드는 게 사실이다. 때로 페친(페이스북 친구)의 사진과 정보를 자기 것으로 위장하는 ‘페이스북화차녀(신분 위장을 소재로 한 일본 소설 『화차』에서 온 말)’ 사건이 경각심을 불러일으키지만, 그것도 순간일 뿐 이용자들의 자발적 정보 유출을 막진 못한다.
그런데 더 흥미로운 사실을 한 페친 담벼락에서 알게 됐다. 자신의 룩 백 동영상을 공개하는 사람과 공개하지 않는 사람, 페친들의룩 백 영상을 보는 사람과 보지 않는 사람, 아예 룩 백 동영상이 뭔지 모르는 사람, 자기 룩 백 영상을 일부러 확인하지 않는 사람들까지 다양했다.
미디어의 영향력은 막강하지만 결국 이용하는 사람은 제각각. N명의 사람만큼 이용도 N가지란 얘기다. 미디어의 이용은 그렇게 단순하지 않다. 미디어 표면만 열심히 들여다보다 종종 세상 읽기에 실패하는 것도 그래서다.
