Launched in 1999 as the Video Music Awards, the festival went through several different titles, including Mnet Music Festival in 2000, followed by Mnet KM Music Festival in 2004. In 2009, the music channel finally established MAMA as the award show’s official name and added “Asia” in the title.
From then, the show attempted to embrace not only Korean fans, but also fans from around the Asia-Pacific region.
When asked the reason of selecting Hong Kong as the venue for three consecutive years, Mnet replied, “We believe Hong Kong is the right place to hold the festival for it is Asia’s cultural and economic hub. Also, its location is so perfect that most Asians will have no difficulty accessing the city.”
The show will be aired on Dec. 3 through cable networks owned by CJ E&M.
