Hyundai Steel seeks patent for iron process using cow dung

Hyundai Steel, the nation’s second-largest steelmaker under Hyundai Motor Group, said yesterday it has applied to patent an iron-making process using cow dung as a furnace heat source.

The process is being developed with its affiliate Hyundai Farmland and Development. The dried cow dung can produce byproduct gas that is 35 percent hotter than coke, Hyundai Steel said. About 23 million tons of cow dung are produced in Korea annually.
