Former Cool singer moves to trot

Singer Kim Sung-soo from Cool will come back as a trot singer by the end of the month, according to local media yesterday.

“I appeared in a trot survival program ‘Trot X’ because I was thinking about converting to be a trot singer. But the opportunity came sooner than I thought after the show,” said the 45-year-old singer.

“Trot X” is Mnet’s new survival program where Korean singers take up the challenge of fusing trot, the oldest type of Korean pop, with genres such as rock, hip-hop and dance. It was a bid to push the genre to be more popular among young listeners.

Cool was one of the pioneering K-pop groups of the 1990s, comprising of Kim Sung-soo, Yu-ri and Lee Jae-hoon, and generating hit tracks such as “Before Sadness Comes,” “Sorrow” and “Woman of Beach.”
