IT certification exam offered from May 31

The certification exam that assesses practical skills in the information technology sector will be carried out starting this year.

The Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning said yesterday it will conduct the first periodic assessment Topcit - Test of Practical Competency in IT - on May 31.

Topcit evaluates core competencies required for software developers and workers in the information and communications technology (ICT) sector related to performing work in the field.

The exam, which was co-developed by ICT and software industry and academia over the past two years, is composed of 65 multiple choice, descriptive and integrated questions to assess problem-solving ability.

“We developed the exam Topcit to solve the problem of engineering students focusing on building up ‘specs’ rather than raising relevant competencies, and companies preferring experienced workers as there has been no tool to assess practical skills in the IT sector,” said a ministry spokesman.

The Topcit results will be used by universities and 45 companies, including Samsung SDS, LG CNS, NCSoft and Microsoft Korea.
