당신을 유명하게 만들어 드리는 TV 리얼리티쇼
특정 상황에 던져진 출연자의 리얼한 일상을 관찰 카메라로 담는 TV 리얼리티쇼. 이는 1990년대 이후 전 세계를 강타한 TV 포맷이다. 데이트•오디션•서바이벌•게임 등 장르도 다양하다. 오죽하면 ‘TV 리얼리티쇼는 미국의 시대정신’이라는 말까지 나왔을까. 우리나라에서는 이런 리얼리티쇼에도 연예인 출연이 많지만 서구 방송에서는 거의 일반인이다. 몸값이 싸다는 경제적 이유가 가장 크다.TV 리얼리티쇼는 전혀 새로운 유형의 인기인들을 만들어내기도 했다. 연예인처럼 특별한 재능이나 노력 없이도 TV 카메라에 지속적으로 노출됨으로써 프로 연예인에 준하는 인기를 누리는 유명인(셀레브리티)이다. 요즘 우리 TV 프로에 많이 나오는 스타의 가족, 각종 오디션•서바이벌 출신들이 이에 해당될 것이다.
이들은 프로 연예인과는 다른 꾸밈없고 신선한 모습으로 시청자의 눈길을 끈다. 카메라 앞에서 보여주는 사생활 노출 수위도 높아졌다. 예전 같으면 TV 앞에서 상상도 못할 과감한 속내도 낱낱이 보여준다. 그러면서 자고 깨어보니 유명해졌다는 이들이 날로 쏟아진다. 방송계의 ‘신상품’, 새로운 스타 탄생이다.
촬영 중 출연자 자살이라는 초유의 사태로 폐지가 결정된 SBS ‘짝’만 해도 출연 신청이 쇄도하는 인기 프로였다. 이번 사건을 계기로 미처 알지 못했던 출연자들의 극심한 스트레스와 제작 윤리 문제가 다시 도마에 올랐다. 해외 유사 사례가 알려지면서 일반인 출연자를 경쟁적 상황에 몰아넣는 리얼리티쇼 제작 전반을 돌아보게도 됐다. 그러나 방송 출연을 즐기고, 카메라 앞에서 사생활을 드러내는 데 주저함 없으며, 그렇게라도 자신을 알리고 유명해지고 싶어하는 세태가 이런 프로의 굳건한 동력임은 부정할 수 없다.
주창윤 서울여대 교수는 오디션 ‘슈퍼스타K’ 열풍이 한창일 때 그 과도한 열기를 우리 사회의 ‘정신적 허기’와 연결시킨 바 있다. 200만 명 넘게 참가신청을 하며 스타 탄생을 꿈꾸는 것은 ‘나르시시즘의 과잉’, 비정상이라는 것이다. 그만큼 많은 사람이 “이상적 자아를 과도하게 열망하며 이상적 자아와 일상적 자아 사이에 낮은 수준의 분열을 겪고 있다”고도 풀이했다(『허기사회』).
‘텔레비전에 내가 나왔으면 정말 좋겠네 정말 좋겠네’라는 잘 알려진 동요가 있다. 손으로 네모상자를 그리며 부른다. 그 작은 네모상자는 유명인으로 가는 지름길이다. 현대사회 최고의 권력인 ‘스타 권력’으로 직행하는 길이다. 최강 자본인 ‘명성 자본’으로 가는 최단코스기도 하다.
논란 끝에 ‘짝’은 폐지되지만 TV 리얼리티쇼가 일반인에게 선사하는 ‘유명함의 욕망 충족’이란 유혹을 외면하기는 어째 어려울 것 같다.
